Latvian Ambassador, visiting the Shirenewton Gypsy & Traveller site

We are delighted and honoured to announced that His Excellancy Mr Eduards Stiprais, Latvian Ambassador to the UK, will be visiting the Shirenewton Gypsy & Traveller site in Cardiff this week. The Ambassador will be meeting with Isaac Blake, Director of the Romani Cultural and Arts Company and seeing our latest project in action combining story telling and animation. This project has allowed young Gypsies and Travellers to research their own culture and develop a sense of pride in that culture. In the process we hope that they have become less tolerant of discrimination and that they recognise their own value and self worth.

This project has been delivered in partnership with Cinetig Production, who have a long track record of making films with young people and have received many awards for their community films including best child produced film in the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival in 2009, and two first prizes in Bradford Animation Festival 2003 for best child produced film.

of Cintetig says “Children often surpass their own expectations when they see the finished animation. The one-to-one approach that we are able to bring with a project like this raises the self esteem of all the children involved.”

This is a great opportunity to put together their own contribution to the national Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month celebration in Newport.

Isaac Blake says that “arts based projects are an important way of working with those young people who may be less comfortable using words, especially the written word to express themselves. The importance of self expression is recognised in Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and these rights apply no less in Shirenewton and across Wales than they do anywhere else”
