New Show Announced Today: Mametz by Owen Sheers

We’re delighted today to let everyone know about the next show in our ‘Year of Surprises’ – Mametz, by Owen Sheers.

A brand new commission from the writer of NTW’s acclaimed The Passion, Mametz is inspired by Owen’s widely-admired poem Mametz Wood, and takes place in Usk, Monmouthshire.  The production runs from 24 June to 5 July, and tickets will go on sale on April 4.

Mametz will give audiences a vivid glimpse into life – and death – in the trenches and battlefields of the Somme, drawing on written material by some of the poets who fought in or witnessed one of the bloodiest conflicts of the war - The Battle of Mametz Wood, in which 4,000 of the 38th (Welsh) Division were killed or wounded. Among the soldiers who took part were several key Welsh and English war poets, including Robert Graves, David Jones, Siegfried Sassoon and Llewelyn Wyn Griffith, and Owen’s own great, great uncle, William Cross.  The production will particularly draw on the work of Jones and Wyn Griffith, and will also feature unexpected stories and contexts – including Einstein’s Theory of Relativity!

We are very proud that this show will be one of the main events of the 14-18 Now arts programme – commemorating the anniversary of World War 1 in the UK.

The production will be directed by award-winning Matthew Dunster and will be an extraordinary immersive event, in the tradition of some of NTW’s most celebrated work.
