NYTW Writing course and WOW on the Waterfront

As I was reading through the blogs I was thinking about what I could possibly contribute? These wonderful stories and reviews and what am I doing at the moment?
What could I tell people about?
After the inital doubt I realised not only do I have quite a bit going on that is interestingly theatre based, (in fact all the interesting things in my life are as it turns out, theatre based) but just today I returned from a fanastic weekend at the Urdd at the Millenium Centre in Cardiff.

I had the pleasure of sharing the weekend with some fantastically talented young people who are hoping to contribute their voice to the writing the 2010 National Youth Theatre Wales performance. Lead by Tim Barker and Manon Eames it gave me, and the rest of the group, a chance to explore our own writing styles and develop ideas that we would like to see fused together through group work.

It also gave us the pleasure... and sometimes the uncomfortable fame of seeing our work being performed... of course the pleasure or uncomfortable experiences depended on how well we felt the writing converted to stage, but a very useful exercise nonetheless! How many oppurtunites in writing do we get to see our work performed.. see how well the words fit and what we can afford to remove allowing the audience to actually be allowed to work their own mind instread of sitting in a numbed state of observation.

There are so many strong voices, and such a strength in acting and writing being displyed during the weekend that you forget the ages range from 16-23 (ish i think!) The weekend becomes a pot of creativity and when the mind starts to weaken under the strain of working out plots and connections withing our writings a simple game will get us back on our toes in just a few minutes.

While down the bay we also had the chance to observe the wonderful Maudits Sonnants circus! And what an experince! The writing group was in awe at the beauty in the design of the giant suspended metal mobile. The objects drawing our attention- musicians and trapieze performers. The musicians were suspended while playing a haunting melody, captavating the huge audince filling the space outside the millenium centre!

As the mobile rotated the flower like structre opened to reveal its pollen, its elegant women moving in ways we couldnt even dream of even closer to the floor, let alone 60ft in the air! The beautiful eiree mobile of humans and metal structure.

As the end aproached we were still stunned, only bought to our senses by a fantastic luminous display of fireworks!

Anyways I only came to write a short piece about how wonderful the writing course is and how it has helped me develop my skills thanks not only to the leaders but also the stimulating minds around me within the group. Instead I ramble on into things mind mind decided, apparently, you needed to know.

Will write again soon.. maybe.. i'll try to keep it short next time

No need to keep things things shorter Bethany - every word was very much worth writing and your whole piece made good reading. It's really good to hear about any successful development work with writers and good to hear your thoughts on the circus - not everyone reading your blog will get to see the show but getting a sense of it from you is great.
