What Are We Going To Do About Theatre and Performance in Cardiff?

Next Saturday, the community of theatre makers in Cardiff has an opportunity to come together to talk about the kind of theatre scene it wants to be a part of and contribute to. The event is open to anybody who cares about theatre in the capital and has something they want to say.

Whether you’re an actor, a director, a designer, a writer, an audience member or a programme seller – whatever your role – if you’ve got something you want to get off your chest, an idea you want to explore or a conversation you want to have, this is the place to do it and to engage with like-minded individuals.

Theatre in Cardiff has changed quite radically over the last few years. There has been development and change with many new and exciting initiatives. In a few months, Sherman Cymru will re-launch itself in a refurbished building; National Theatre Wales is already having a successful second season; Chapter’s support for emerging artists goes from strength to strength and many of the capital’s companies produce innovative and dynamic work.

However, even in a new and productive landscape, there are issues and needs that are sometimes forgotten about. Also sometimes artists forget that they can contribute to change and determine the future they want. But, in order to do so, artists firstly need to come together and speak aloud to each other their dreams, their concerns and their needs.

As its name suggests, Open Space is an inclusive and user-friendly means of enabling people to identify the issues they care about, self-select into informal discussion groups, and engage in dialogue with people who care about the same things.

Invented by a business consultant, Open Space has also – in the last few years –been appropriated by artists. Open Space has now moved beyond Improbable’s ground-breaking project Devoted and Disgruntled (http://devotedanddisgruntled.ning.com/) to have significant impact on creative communities in Bristol, Newcastle, Manchester and many other parts of the UK.

Next Saturday – November 5^th – Lucid is hosting an event in which those with a passion for the future of theatre in Cardiff can join forces together and have dialogue about where it should go next.
