Opportunity: Shared Space Ahead Commission, Haverfordwest

Shared Space Ahead

Confluence is inviting applications from artists with either a performative or combined arts practice to undertake a commission to create and produce a socially engaged and site-specific artwork in Haverfordwest. The commission, which is part of a three-year programme to test new models of regeneration and collaboration through the arts, responds directly to the notion of how people and vehicles could navigate and share public space in the centre of Haverfordwest.
Confluence is a creative collaboration between PLANED, spacetocreate, iDeA Architects, Transition Haverfordwest and Pembrokeshire County Council which has been awarded funding from Ideas: People: Places, an Arts Council of Wales strategic arts and regeneration initiative. Confluence is devising and testing a new and imaginative model of town centre renewal, engaging the community to inspire and shape the process of urban planning, design and regeneration in Haverfordwest.

Shared space ahead provides an opportunity to engage the community in the regeneration process in a key public space in Haverfordwest. The site for the commission is Castle Square. Despite efforts to improve the urban fabric of the square, key issues remain such as the continual flow of vehicles that mitigate against its attractiveness as a public space. Although the square has a civic setting, surrounded by buildings of fine architectural quality, it has yet to realise it’s potential as having any memorable sense of place.

Taking the commission’s title as a metaphor, the artist/ practice will immerse themselves within Haverfordwest and work collaboratively with its people to produce an artwork, which is also a thought-provoking response to the subject.

The commission extends the consultation begun in the ‘Big Map’ sessions, and is intended to demonstrate through a temporary event, how public space in Haverfordwest could be navigated as ‘shared space’, and ultimately, how this approach could expand outward through the historic town centre in the future.

An inclusive fee of £22,000 is offered for the commission.
