The Way Of It

A cycle of poems by R.S. Thomas (1913-2000). Born from the realisation, gained whilst idly flicking through a book of his collected verse some years ago, that the recurring subject-matter – faith, loneliness, marriage, the art of poetry, rural Wales, Welshness in general – and his love/hate relationship with it might form the basis for a stimulating performance piece. Neither a biography - see Thomas’ autobiography Neb; Byron Rogers’ The Man Who Went Into The West; Alone Together, Neil McKay’s radio drama - nor a traditional poetry recital, but a weaving of a selection of the poems into a vaguely biographical narrative. To quote Rogers: “The poet, Thomas believes, is his poetry; all else is gossip and trivia”. A number of e-mail consultations with On The Edge producer and one-man-show veteran Michael Kelligan follow, finally resulting in what appears to be a workable draft. First performance, Monday 1st November, 7.30 pm, The Dylan Thomas Centre, Swansea, directed by Jo Furber, curator of the Dylan Thomas Exhibition. Part of the 2010 Dylan Thomas Festival: “A Home From Home For The Thomases”.
