Real Human Being – Taking Flight Theatre Company

Taking Flight Theatre’s current tour of Matthew Bulgo’s new piece of writing ‘Real Human Being’ has been going extremely well. For the past fortnight the team have been travelling to schools and youth clubs around Bridgend providing a unique opportunity to explore the theme of disability-related harassment through Forum Theatre.

The project is funded by The Home Office and has been developed in collaboration with Disability Wales.

Directed by Elise Davison, cast members include Cara Readle known for her role as ‘Layla’ in The Story of Tracy Beaker and ‘Elen’ in Baker Boys, Simon Morgan-Thomas, Amy Griggs and Dan Edge, an aerialist, in the Paralympics London 2012 Opening Ceremony. The day is facilitated by Beth House.

‘Real Human Being’ is presented to year 8/9 (aged 12-14) secondary school pupils and young people engaged with the local Youth Service across the Bridgend area of South Wales.

Having spent the day exploring the issue of Disability Hate Crime through watching the show and also by getting actively involved in forum techniques, the young people leave with a better understanding and respect for diversity and difference.

We have received a wonderful response from both students and staff and feedback has been extremely positive.

The ‘Real Human Being’ team have been having a lot of fun on the road and are all thrilled to be involved in such a thought provoking and hard hitting project.
