Summary of discussion: (Notes, ideas, further questions, conclusions, recommendations for actions to take, contact details of relevant people / organisations etc)
- How can we produce work that is sustainable? (in both its subject matter and in the way it is created)
- Place emphasis on planning sustainably from the beginning of the creative process: can larger organisations make it clear to their artists that they have a sustainability policy in place that their work should adhere to?
- Adopt a ‘Cradle to Cradle’ philosophy – can items be acquired/borrowed/hired instead of being bought new? If something is being bought new – what is its life after the production? Will it be put in the skip or will it go on to another life?
o Sharing of assets: can bigger companies loan/hire out their equipment/scenery/props/costumes to smaller companies so they don’t need to but new?
- A Green Prism approach to thinking – with every decision we make, can we question if it is practical/sustainable/ethical/necessary?
- What can smaller companies and individual artists do??? It is harder to re-use things when we have no storage space, for example. Can we group together as a collective to share resources/storage space/ideas?
- The logisitics of re-using items – for example, in Wales, the set exchange philosophy does not work as well in places like London because our theatres are so far apart that companies must travel along distance to pick a disused set up
- Spreading awareness in education – e.g. our theatre schools do not think sustainably (we talked specifically in terms of design – the focus is on making the next unique, dazzling set that will be the portfolio for your next job, not about how you can use resources that already exist at a theatre eg standard sized steel deck, a floor cloth that is in storage) – can sustainability become another practicality that we think of when we make new theatre, i.e. in the way that we consider sightlines?
o Educational practice won’t change unless the industry requires that it does
o The role of the designer in sustainable thinking/sustainable practice – sustainably acquired resources/using what is already available
o What can we do in schools to raise awareness? Can we as theatre makers volunteer to go in an talk about theatre as a profession? Can we help to normalise sustainable practice (e.g. go in to a school and run a workshop using scrap materials from a previous production – ensuring materials haven’t gone to waste and reinforcing the reuse message)
- FUNDING – wouldn’t it be great if on a funding application, you could write how much of your budget you wanted to give towards sustainability in your project?!
o Can and will bodies like ACW introduce a sustainability policy that companies will need to adopt to be eligible for funding? Can we lean on them to make this happen?
o How much ACW money is spent on things that will ultimately be thrown away?
o Should the industry be lobbying others (e.g. the government) to create change?
- How do we encourage and enable one another to be more environmentally focussed as artists (it is easy to feel alone)
o Talk to each other, share questions/concerns/ sustainable suppliers you have found
o Champion your own sustainable thinking – talk about it on your website/in programme notes/when bidding for work – share your successes AND your failures in sustainable practice
 Is there a logo that can be created for individuals who do adopt sustainable thinking to put on their website? (eg a Green Prism)
o Be prepared to help out
o Look at your practice and use that to inspire sustainability in others
o Money and funding come into play again! – It is more expensive to think and source sustainably – it takes more time and effort, it requires more than 1 person to do a job (eg looking for second hand costumes instead of buying quickly and cheaply from Primark)
 How can sustainability affect the pay/economy of the industry?
o DON’T GIVE UP
- Look outside of theatre for solutions: skills that people have outside of theatre that could be used in the industry/bring the conversation of sustainability further up the agenda
o Use a green concept as the genesis as a new piece – e.g Power Tracker
o Will my theatre piece ultimately make a difference? Will the audience take the message away and do something about it?
o Take theatre and sustainability out of theatre spaces and into public spaces (ie outdoors)
- DO SOMETHING -go further than conversations about sustainability and TAKE ACTION
- Edinburgh Fringe festival and mass-flyering wastage – what is the answer?
- Companies/resources to consider/look at in this area:
SiPA (Sustainability in Production Alliance
NTW’s sustainability policy
Julie’s Bicycle
Extinction Rebellion
Sustainability Conference in Newport, !3th June – more news soon!

Crynodeb o'r drafodaeth: (Nodiadau, syniadau, cwestiynau, casgliadau, argymhellion ar gyfer camau i'w cymryd, manylion cyswllt pobl/sefydliadau perthnasol ac ati)
- Sut allwn ni gynhyrchu gwaith sy'n gynaliadwy? (o ran ei bwnc a'r dull o'i greu)
- Rhoi pwyslais ar gynllunio'n gynaliadwy o ddechrau'r broses greadigol: all sefydliadau mwy egluro i'w hartistiaid bod ganddynt bolisi cynaladwyedd y dylai eu gwaith lynu wrtho?
- Mabwysiadu athroniaeth ‘O'r Crud i'r Crud’ – all eitemau gael eu caffael/benthyg/hurio yn lle eu prynu o'r newydd? Os yw rhywbeth yn cael ei brynu o'r newydd - beth fydd ei fywyd ar ôl y cynhyrchiad? A gaiff ei roi yn y sgip neu a fydd yn mynd ymlaen i gael bywyd arall?
o Rhannu asedau: all cwmnïau mwy roi benthyg/hurio eu cyfarpar/setiau/propiau/gwisgoedd i gwmnïau llai fel nad oes angen iddynt brynu rhai newydd?
- Dull Prism Gwyrdd o feddwl - gyda phob penderfyniad a wnawn, a allwn gwestiynu a yw'n ymarferol/gynaliadwy/foesegol/ofynnol?
- Beth all cwmnïau llai ac artistiaid unigol ei wneud??? Mae'n anos ailddefnyddio pethau pan nad oes gennym unrhyw le i'w storio, er enghraifft. A allwn ddod ynghyd fel cydweithfa i rannu adnoddau/storfeydd/syniadau?
- Logisteg ailddefnyddio eitemau - er enghraifft, yng Nghymru nid yw'r athroniaeth cyfnewid setiau'n gweithio mor dda â mewn lleoedd fel Llundain oherwydd bod ein theatrau mor bell i ffwrdd o'i gilydd, gan olygu bod yn rhaid i gwmnïau deithio pellter hir i godi set nad yw'n cael ei defnyddio.
- Lledaenu ymwybyddiaeth mewn addysg - e.e. nid yw ein hysgolion theatr yn meddwl mewn ffordd gynaliadwy (siaradom yn benodol am ddylunio - mae'r ffocws ar wneud y set unigryw, llachar nesaf a fydd yn bortffolio eich swydd nesaf, nid ar sut y gallwch ddefnyddio adnoddau sydd eisoes yn bodoli mewn theatr e.e. dec dur o faint safonol, cynfas llawr sydd mewn stordy) - all cynaladwyedd fynd yn fater ymarferol arall yr ydym yn meddwl amdano pan fyddwn yn creu theatr newydd, h.y. yn yr un ffordd ag yr ydym yn ystyried llinellau golwg?
o Ni fydd arfer addysgol yn newid oni bai bod y diwydiant yn mynnu ei fod yn newid
o Rôl y dylunydd mewn meddwl ymarferol/arfer cynaliadwy - adnoddau a gaffaelir yn gynaliadwy/defnyddio'r hyn sydd eisoes ar gael
o Beth allwn ei wneud mewn ysgolion i godi ymwybyddiaeth? Allwn ni fel crewyr theatr fynd atynt a siarad am theatr fel proffesiwn? Allwn ni helpu normaleiddio arfer cynaliadwy (e.e. mynd i ysgol a rhedeg gweithdy gan ddefnyddio'r hyn sy'n weddill o gynhyrchiad blaenorol - gan sicrhau nad yw deunyddiau wedi cael eu gwastraffu a chadarnhau'r neges ailddefnyddio)
- CYLLID – oni fyddai'n grêt petai modd i chi nodi faint o'ch cyllideb roeddech eisiau ei rhoi tuag at gynaladwyedd yn eich prosiect mewn cais am gyllid?!
o A all ac a fydd cyrff fel Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru (CCC) yn cyflwyno polisi cynaladwyedd y bydd angen i gwmnïau ei fabwysiadu er mwyn bod yn gymwys i gael eu cyllido? A allwn roi pwysau arnynt i wneud i hyn ddigwydd?
o Faint o arian CCC sy'n cael ei wario ar bethau a gaiff eu taflu i ffwrdd yn y pen draw?
o A ddylai'r diwydiant fod yn lobio eraill (e.e. y llywodraeth) i greu newid?
- Sut ydym yn annog ac yn galluogi ein gilydd i gael mwy o ffocws amgylcheddol fel artistiaid (mae'n hawdd teimlo'n unig)
o Siarad â'ch gilydd, rhannu cwestiynau/ pryderon/ cyflenwyr cynaliadwy rydych wedi dod o hyd iddynt
o Hyrwyddo eich syniadau cynaliadwy eich hun - siarad amdano ar eich gwefan/mewn nodiadau rhaglen/wrth gynnig am waith - rhannu eich llwyddiannau A'CH methiannau mewn arfer cynaliadwy
 Oes logo y gellir ei greu ar gyfer unigolion sy'n mabwysiadu syniadau cynaliadwy i'w rhoi ar eu gwefan? (e.e. Prism Gwyrdd)
o Bod yn barod i helpu allan
o Edrych ar eich arfer a defnyddiwch hynny i ysbrydoli cynaladwyedd ymysg pobl eraill
o Daw arian a chyllid i'w amlwg eto! – Mae'n bwysicach meddwl a dod o hyd i ffynonellau cynaliadwy – mae'n cymryd mwy o amser ac ymdrech, mae'n gofyn am fwy nag 1 person i wneud tasg (e.e. chwilio am wisgoedd ail law yn lle prynu'n gyflym ac yn rhad o Primark)
 Sut gall cynaladwyedd effeithio ar dâl/economi'r diwydiant?
o PAID Â RHOI'R GORAU IDDI
- Chwilio am atebion y tu allan i'r theatr: sgiliau sydd gan bobl y tu allan i'r theatr y gellir eu defnyddio yn y diwydiant/symud y sgwrs am gynaladwyedd ymhellach i fyny'r agenda
o Defnyddio cysyniad gwyrdd fel dechreuad darn newydd - e.e. Power Tracker
o Yn y pen draw a fydd fy narn theatr yn gwneud gwahaniaeth? A fydd y gynulleidfa'n mynd â'r neges i ffwrdd a gwneud rhywbeth amdano?
o Mynd â theatr a chynaladwyedd y tu allan i ofodau theatr ac i fannau cyhoeddus (h.y. awyr agored)
- GWNEWCH RYWBETH - ewch ymhellach na sgyrsiau am gynaladwyedd a CHYMERWCH GAMAU
- Gŵyl Ymylol Caeredin a gwastraff ar ffurf taflenni di-rif? Beth yw'r ateb?
- Cwmnïau/adnoddau i'w hystyried/archwilio yn y maes hwn:
SiPA (Cynghrair Cynaladwyedd mewn Cynhyrchu)
Polisi cynaladwyedd NTW
Julie’s Bicycle
Extinction Rebellion
Cynhadledd Cynaladwyedd yng Nghasnewydd, 13 Mehefin- mwy o newyddion cyn bo hir!
