Some thoughts about recording your session
What is the title of your session?
Where is the mid-scale work?
What is the name of the person who called the session?
Bud
Who attended the session? (You can pass this piece of paper round and ask people to write their name on it.)
Bud, Matteo, Frank, Sam, Ruth, Jeremy, Fi, Jen, Bridget, Gavin, Hannah, Simon, Kully
Summary of discussion: (Notes, ideas, further questions, conclusions, recommendations for actions to take, contact details of relevant people / organisations etc)
Do we mean ‘mid-scale’ as audiences attendance or size of piece?
- The audiences attending theatre is so low that it’s hard to justify any midscale work. We mean the scale of the4 art, but without the audience attending, we can’t create work of scale or quality. Quality of work is stretched thinly.
Levels of funding can be restrictive in making the jump from small to mid. Funding deadlines, funding caps, lack of trust in artists who have only ever been able to achieve small scale due to funding.
- Risk taking- need a name behind you for people to trust that you are capable of making bigger work. Catch 22- can’t exposure of making bigger work, so can’t get funding to make bigger work.
Touring logistics- sizes of staged vary, limited by target audiences, touring demands- 1 day get-ins, venues only booking 1night shows, geography.
Is the issue that the audiences aren’t there so the venues can’t sustain mid-scale?
`Venues not taking risks in their bookings.
ACW – all work heavily subsidised.
Is there a lack of confidence in work created in Wales because we’re not able to show what we can do across the border? Having a successful show outside Wales validates the quality for venues and funding bodies. We don’t trust in Wales’s own artists!!
ACW not willing to fund work outside Wales means that work is never validated/values i.e artists never develop.
- Have extra control measures come in place due to misues of funds that means ACW funding process is now too rigorous?
-Do the people of Wales even want to see theatre?
Only as a company can you apply for ACE funding, not as an individual?
What do we mean by mid-scale venues? Sherman main stage is used for mid-scale touring, but is one of the biggest theatres in Wales.
How do we as emerging artists make the leap from small to mid-scale?
-Co-operative artists – collective of independent artists sharing of resources etc.
Possible actions out of this!!
- Conversations about structural / infrastructural support.
- Companies networking together, creating tours together.
- Do we need a ‘space’ to go to so we can work together, not try and develop these ideas alone?
- DO we need to change our touring model?
- Should the existing bigger organisations be trying to harder co-produce, not just put their names to stuff?
- What does a proper co-producing relationship look like?
- Division of labour between companies and bigger venues!

Beth yw teitl eich sesiwn?
Ble mae'r gwaith canolig ei faint?
Beth yw enw'r person a alwodd y sesiwn?
Bud
Pwy ddaeth i'r sesiwn? (Gallwch basio'r darn hwn o bapur o gwmpas a gofyn i bobl ysgrifennu eu henwau arno.)
Bud, Matteo, Frank, Sam, Ruth, Jeremy, Fi, Jen, Bridget, Gavin, Hannah, Simon, Kully
Crynodeb o'r drafodaeth: (Nodiadau, syniadau, cwestiynau, casgliadau, argymhellion ar gyfer camau i'w cymryd, manylion cyswllt pobl/sefydliadau perthnasol ac ati)
A ydym yn golygu 'canolig ei faint' o ran niferoedd cynulleidfaoedd neu faint y darn?
Gall lefelau cyllid fod yn rhwystr wrth wneud y naid o fach i ganolig. Dyddiadau cau cyllid, capiau cyllid, diffyg ymddiriedaeth mewn artistiaid sydd ond erioed wedi gallu cyflawni graddfa fach oherwydd cyllid.
Logisteg teithio - maint llwyfannau yn amrywio, cyfyngiad o ran cynulleidfaoedd targed, galwadau teithio - 1 diwrnod i osod, lleoliadau yn derbyn sioeau am 1 noson yn unig, daearyddiaeth.
Ai'r broblem yw nad yw'r cynulleidfaoedd yno felly ni all y lleoliadau gynnal gwaith canolig ei faint?
Lleoliadau yn peidio â chymryd risgiau wrth dderbyn cynyrchiadau.
Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru – yr holl waith yn cael cymhorthdal mawr.
A oes diffyg hyder mewn gwaith a grëwyd yng Nghymru oherwydd ni allwn ddangos yr hyn y gallwn ei wneud ar draws y ffin? Mae cael sioe lwyddiannus y tu allan i Gymru yn dilysu'r ansawdd ar gyfer lleoliadau a chyrff cyllido. Nid ydym yn ymddiried yn artistiaid Cymru ei hun!!
Nid yw Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru yn barod i gyllido gwaith y tu allan i Gymru ac mae hynny'n golygu nad yw gwaith byth yn cael ei ddilysu/gwerthfawrogi h.y. nid yw artistiaid byth yn datblygu.
-A yw pobl Cymru am weld theatr hyd yn oed?
Gallwch wneud cais am gyllid CCC fel cwmni yn unig, nid fel unigolyn?
Beth ydym yn ei olygu wrth leoliadau canolig eu maint? Defnyddir prif lwyfan y Sherman ar gyfer teithio cynyrchiadau canolig eu maint, ond hon yw un o theatrau mwyaf Cymru.
Sut rydym fel artistiaid sy'n dod i'r amlwg yn gwneud y naid o fach i ganolig ei maint?
-Artistiaid cydweithredol – cyweithfa o artistiaid annibynnol yn rhannu adnoddau ac ati.
Camau gweithredu posibl o hyn!!
