The NYTW14 Design Process by Cerian Wilshere-Davies

Cerian Wilshere Davies – The Theatre Design Process

Production Member on Residency with the National Youth Theatre of Wales. Aberystwyth Arts Centre. August/September 2014

The process has been fun but also very challenging. We began making straight away.

We spent many a day painting, cutting and ‘vinyling’ to create the futuristic Rubix’s Cube/TRON styled set.

We then started on making the theatre space. We put together the truss and set up the lights and tabs.

After finishing the truss we had to put down a dance floor, source our props and set up the stage.

A few bumpy patches and a lot of vinyl repair later we are where we are now: the opening day of the show.

We open today and I am just as nervous as the actors due to my and the rest of the backstage team’s constant stage presence.

The show is looking wonderful and I’m really excited to start the tour! (Even though we have hours of packing up and setting back up to do)

With kind thanks for the bursary
