This is a bit of a tangent - I have just posted a small video record of part of a sound work I was commissioned to make for Weymouth’s seafront last summer, straight after completing The Persians -  but bear with me, there is a connection, or at least a reason. 

 

The reason for the post is that I have been thinking about sound. 

 

Over the past two weeks a couple of the technical team that worked with us on The Persians have been researching some of our initial sound ideas for Coriolan/us. That, and starting work on the next event from my ‘just a little bit of history repeating’ project, have led me back to the origins of some of those ideas. 

 

Sound is very important to me in the work. Not just in content, but also in its architecture. There are decisions about the sound that already exists at a site, the sounds we make there, and what additional sounds we might bring with us. But also decisions about how we meet that sound, how we hear it, and from where.

 

The architecture and behaviour of the sound for Coriolan/us is one of my main initial priorities. Everything about the piece, as we are thinking about it, is going to make the sound a challenge. But I have big aspirations for what we might achieve with it.

 

And some of those aspirations come from small intimate beginnings...
