NTW, BBC Cymru Wales and BBC Writersroom are all thrilled to be launching the 2014 Wales Drama Award.

With a first prize of £10,000, and two runners up prizes of £1,000, the award is unique in accepting entries in any full-length drama format - including, TV, theatre, film, radio, digital - underlining the versatility of today's writers across many media, and the wealth of platforms available to them.

The competition is open to any writer residing in Wales. Writers must submit a full-length English-language script in any medium, unperformed/unproduced and at least 30 minutes long. Please visit the Writersroom site here for details on how to submit your script. BBC Writersroom will be accepting submissions for the Wales Drama Award between Monday 22nd September and 5pm on 7th October 2014.  (Please note that this 'window' of submissions is due to the way that the Writersroom site is organised now, however we wanted to give a decent length of notice for people to choose or develop scripts, hence today's announcement date.)

A series of open sessions will be held in Cardiff, Aberystwyth, and Wrexham, in which writers can find out more information face-to-face. For further details and to book a place at one of these workshops, go to:  http://www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/opportunities/Wales-Drama-Award

This year the winning script will be read at a special award ceremony towards the end of 2014.  As the winning script can be in any format, the exact nature of this event, and the subsequent package of support for the winning writer will be developed in consultation with the winner, but both the BBC and NTW will aim to support the winner's development in any way they can.

The award is open to writers at all stages in their careers and lives.  The initial longlisting is done by Writersroom readers, with senior staff from the BBC and NTW creating a shortlist.  The final selection of the winner from the shortlist will be by a judges panel of Adrian Davies, Lucy Gannon, Faith Penhale, Kate Rowland and myself.  All of the shortlisted writers will be invited to meet the panel to discuss the support that can be offered them if they win; however, selection of the winner will be first and foremost on the basis of the strength of the individual scripts.

The first Wales Drama Award in 2012 was, of course, won by Kath Chandler who had this to say:

"Winning the inaugural Wales Drama Award in 2012 was an exciting turning point in my career, raising my profile and presenting me with several new opportunities and possibilities. I would urge all Wales-based writers to enter their work this year."

Enough said: Go for it writers!
