As the cold weather continues my mind is turning to summer.

This June we'll be taking around twenty artists away on our first WalesLab summer camp; as the national lottery says IT COULD BE YOU. We'll let people know how to apply shortly but before we do, we want to know what you'd like it to be?

There are many diferent residency programmes & workshop schemes but what should this one look and feel like?

Here's the basics:

2 weeks residential (in Wales)

20 artists

The ethos of it is about sharing and collaborating, but we want your suggestions for how this could be as fruitful as possible.

For example, would it be good to have someone come and talk about funding applications, or tax? Would you like each participant to run a workshop about something they're an 'expert' in? How much structure would you want? Would mentors be useful? How much of the time would you like ot be left alone to just get on with your own projects?

We're shaping the programme over the next few weeks so  any thoughts welcome, and we'll let you know how to apply in March.

Hi Matt,

Is this camp going to be sometime in the month of June? Thanks!

Also I think structure, even lose, is a good thing, especially for the first week. I think it would be a good idea to spread the day between collective work/group sessions (including stuff about tax, funding applications etc.) and then creative/exploratory sessions in the afternoon perhaps. Then maybe with some designated points throughout the fortnight for sharing - mini scratches so that the group can see how people's work is coming along. I also think it would be a good idea if in those exploratory sessions, artists weren't all working individually, but perhaps were collaborating to focus on one of their specific projects, so that you could get others' direct input into your work.

Phew - longer than I thought...

Hi, just wondered if applications were open yet? Thanks!

@Kit thanks - yeah goals are important and when we open applications part of that will be about a project you want to work on individually.

@abdul I always had you down as a jazz hands man.

I think having a few specific masterclasses and ideas sharing sessions would be great, but also time and space to work in response to new ideas.  Maybe you could do half days doing structured sessions and half days free to work (by yourself or collaboratively)?

These thing often work best when you have a goal in mind, so perhaps artists could come with a new idea to develop during the week?  In which case perhaps the structured sessions should be aimed at helping with that.

Think it should be a camp which has musical created by the end of it - lol

In all seriousness I think it should have some variety, I think there should be an aspect of working on own projects on a daily basis but there should also be workshops around elements which would impact on the personal projects.

Sessions which spark creative thoughts but also enable thinking around practical aspects of personal project.

Personally,  funding applications and anything business would be of great help.  I think there should be structured events and room to develop ideas as well.  Mentors would be useful depending on their area of expertise.  My opinion is due to me feeling new in this career.  Would be interested to find out more :)
