I had an infection in a saliva gland in my cheek in 2003. Apparently it was because I got dehydrated climbing a mountain. My face got really big and we called it "Donut Face". I was in such pain that on the way to the V Festival in Chelmsford, I made my then-boyfriend stop at a hospital in Bristol (the nasty one, apparently) to get some industial-strength painkillers. I waited about 10 mins to be seen and was then admitted for 5 days for septicemia. I missed the Festival. He didn't. I spent 5…

I spent 5 days in solitary confinement but the nurse let me have curry delivered from a local take away and I watched Restoration with Griff Rhys Jones in a tiny TV room with my drip. When I broke my arm when I was 5 the nurse put a patch of anaesthetic cream on the back of my hand and said it was bubble bath. When the doctor gave me an injection on the back of my hand, and asked me to count to five, he said it was milk and I made it to 'two'. I really thought that it was milk.

I broke and dislocated 2 of my fingers a few years ago.
The care that I received from the NHS was, what I can best describe as "bespoke".
I was working as a trapeze artist at the time, and said that I needed to get back to work asap. The doctor who performed the operation I needed told me that he could either perform the operation in a way that would give me good looking, straight fingers in the future, or get my hand healed with a strong grip.
I chose the latter, and was able to work again…

The story here is that when I went for follow-up treatments, the doctor would bring a bunch of students with him because I had become a bit of a case-study. Before the curtains where swooshed back and they came in to inspect me, I would always hear him murmering "..trapeze artist...severe trauma...not aesthetic.." to a chorus of sniggers from his students. I must say, I quite liked it.
