What I do:
Creative Arts Researcher/Performer
A little more about me:
I am a creative arts researcher. My practice lies between performance, audio-based artwork, and theatre. My work is motivated by a desire to experiment with different modes of participatory encounter, bringing audience members together in order to understand and ask larger questions related to what it means to be human from different political and ethical perspectives.

From my piece entitled ‘Tortilla or No Tortilla’ (2012) in which the audience had to collaboratively cook a Spanish tortilla in 12 minutes, to ‘Five Minutes of Fame’ in which I took to the streets to sing karaoke until I lost my voice, my work continually looks for interesting and unusual formats from which to ask, what does it mean to be together?

Other previous projects have included ‘Ancestral Archive: A potted family history’, an audio-based performance exploring genealogy and the transference of physiognomic traits. More recently for Aberystwyth Arts Centre and Green Man Festival I created and performed ‘Listening to Water’, a performance based on a collaborative investigation into ancient water sources and sites in and around Ceredigion and Powys. My work often combines personal anecdotes and interests with intellectual insights and unusual objects.

I am currently undertaking a fully funded practice-based PhD at Aberystwyth University investigating listening, the voice, and speech as theatrical modes of being. I hold a Masters in Performance (2007) and a Degree (2004, with hons) in English Literature & Drama both awarded by Queen Mary University of London. My work has been shown in the UK, Germany and Spain in festivals and conferences including Performance Studies International, The Reina Sofia Museum (Madrid, Spain), Arena Festival (Nuremberg, Germany), The Arts Depot (London, UK), The Basement (Brighton, UK) and Arnolfini (Bristol, UK). My research has also been disseminated in a peer reviewed online journal.

I am associate artist at Aberystwyth Arts Centre.
Location:
Aberystwyth
Projects I’m working on:
Re-Imagining Llanbedrog
Re-imagining Llanbedrog is a creative investigation into place and people’s memories. Llanbedrog has been an important holiday destination for my family since the 1950’s. Re-imagining Llanbedrog aims to combine and uncover fragments of a personal story combined with the oral history of a popular tourist resort. It not only provides a way to investigate place and peoples memories, but also re-imagines a families past and previous habits no longer in existence.

The piece has been developed with the kind support of WalesLab, a National Theatre Wales initiative. It has also been supported by Arts Council Wales.

Vocal Spiel
Vocal Spiel is a one-woman solo show that plays with the sound of language, in particular, what might be above, beyond, or behind our everyday exchanges. Spiel, taken from German, is a tricky word; it means ‘play’, ‘game’, ‘performance’ and ‘gamble’ all at once reflecting what might occur in this performance.

The piece gathers material from micro-situations observed in the everyday garnered through a process of eavesdropping in hairdressers, coffee shops, and pubs. Using a range of accents, rhythms, and repetitions, the piece intends to make you think twice about what might be beyond, above or below these habitual exchanges.

The piece is currently in development.

Listening to Water

Listening to Water, in Welsh - Gwrando ar y Dŵr, was an artistic exploration into sensory connections to the landscape which sought to ask; how might listening inform our sense of place? How can a shift in the gaze allow ancient resonances to appear?

These are some of the questions that have drove a series of explorations to well sites in the Welsh counties of Ceredigion and Powys. A process that led three artists from distinct backgrounds to wander together and linger in the local landscape in ways they couldn’t have previously imagined.
