Casting Call: This Incredible Life

Canoe Theatre and Theatrau Sir Gâr are producing ‘This Incredible Life’ by Alan Harris, a two-hander play funded by the Arts Council Wales, this Autumn. The play will be directed by Julia Thomas (NTW - Cotton Fingers, Derby Theatre – Two, and Curve - George’s Marvellous Medicine). It was first produced at Ffwrnes, Llanelli  in 2016.

We are currently casting the role of Robert.

Robert works in business management but had dreams of going into journalism as a child. This would have satisfied his vivid imagination but instead he fires people for a living. He is 44 but pretends that he is 39 and he grew up in Wales but now lives in Oxford. Robert has a pedantic and frustrated quality about him, he likes to be right and goes through life with his armour on, but deep down he is loving and sensitive.

We would like to work with an actor who has great comic timing, and a dry sense of humour, as well as the ability to deliver a poignant and tear-jerking final monologue.

Auditions will be at Ffwrnes, Llanelli in the week beginning Mon 16 July (exact date TBC). Canoe will cover the cost of a return train fare. Each slot will be 30 minutes long and actors will be asked to read from the script and have an informal discussion about the play. The full script will be sent prior to the audition. Actors would be expected to have read it but not be asked to learn any sections.

Dates:

  • Rehearsals: 3rd-22nd September in Llanelli
  • Tech: 24th-26th September in Llanelli
  • Previews: 26th + 27th September at Ffwrnes, Llanelli
  • Press night: 28th September
  • Tour of Wales (7 venues): 1st-13th October

There may be additional days of development in early August - exact dates TBC.

This is a paid position, with subsistence for the rehearsal period. All accommodation and transport for the touring period will be covered by the company.

About the play:

This Incredible life takes place in the living room of a retired journalist Mab and her nephew Robert. Robert doesn’t want to be there but feels an obligation to his aging aunt. However on this day he realises that Mab isn’t making sense and he doesn’t know what to believe anymore.

Mab has spent her life telling stories.

Incredible stories.

She was a jet-setting journalist, putting people’s lives into print.

As a young boy, her nephew Robert hung on her every word.

He doesn’t listen anymore.

In a time when fake  news  has  made  it  into  the  vernacular,  and  the  line  between  fact  and  fiction  becomes  blurred,  does  truth  really  matter?

Alan Harris’ latest comedy sweep you  off  your  feet  with  live  music,  film  and  a  story  that  will  lift  the  spirits  and  warm  your  heart,  MGM  style.

This Dementia Friendly production will be supported by workshops and activities.
