– Job Description

Fee:                                   £4,000 to cover preparatory fee, attendance at 4 weeks of rehearsals and first week of performances

period  required:           Pre-Production: April-July 2022

purpose of the role

The Director will be responsible for directing Struts & Frets outdoor performance “Y Mabinogi & Other Tales”. This will be a public performance primarily aimed at children and families and will be performed at heritage sites across Wales as part of the Children’s Festival of Welsh History in Sept/Oct 2022. The production will be based on the Four Branches of the Mabinogi and other myths and legends from Welsh folklore. The production will be devised with and performed by a professional cast of bi-lingual (Welsh & English) performers. The Director will oversee a creative team including Set & Costume Designer, Sound Designer, Professional Actors, Stage Manager and Puppeteers. The Director will be supported by the Struts and Frets Artistic Director & Producer throughout the process.

Main Duties and responsibilities

 

Preparation of the background, context and meaning of the production Preparation of an interpretative and demonstrative vision of the production To direct the production to a high standard

Working with the creative and production team to evolve and co-ordinate a unified outdoor performance

Attendance at pre-production meetings with artistic, production and management personnel, subject to the Director’s reasonable availability prior to rehearsal

Planning a detailed rehearsal schedule with the Producer and Stage Manage

Directing the performers during the given period of rehearsal in order to facilitate the preparation of their performances and their co-ordination into a unified production at a professional standard

To work within the specified budgets & timescales for the production To undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Producer

To champion the value of Welsh language and history throughout the process

To act always in the best interest of Struts and Frets

Any other duties as reasonably required

person specification - essential:

At least 3 years’ experience of working with and managing a full creative team (including Sound Designer, Set Designer, Actors, Stage Manager)

Bi-lingual - equally comfortable conversing in Welsh or English Excellent negotiation and interpersonal skills

Significant experience in directing professional outdoor performances Significant experience of directing productions for children and family audiences

An exciting vision which aligns with Struts and Frets artistic work Available on the dates specified

Excellent organisation skills

Open and honest communication

A positive attitude with a high level of self-motivation and ability to work on your initiative
