ABOUT US

Empty Pocket is a new writing theatre outfit founded in 2010 by writer/directors Anna Poole and Natalie Stone. The two met at the Sherman Writer’s Group whilst working on a collaborative piece that was later performed at Egin: Springboard 2011 at Chapter Arts. They had both previously written and directed their own work and so combined to co-produce a play at Cardiff’s 10 Feet Tall in September 2010 entitled ‘Can I Have a Job Please?’ Following this, they went on to create a new genre of performance called Tea Party Theatre, and put on a theatrical tea party at Cardiff’s The Pot Café in April 2011. Now they are embarking on their largest project to date.

Empty Pocket are passionate about new writing, chances to explore and express fresh creative ideas, and about developing accessible and innovative theatre.

------------------[On]Stage: Hello Mrs Silverstone and A Sunday Roast

Now Empty Pocket are back with two fresh plays by the founding writer/directors Anna and Natalie.

[On]Stage is a one night creative showdown, presenting two very different pieces where the main characters are absent from the stage.

Fittingly, as these freshly penned scripts take to the stage they draw our attention to the characters who remain off it.

[On]Stage takes a look backstage.

Hello Mrs. Silverstone by Natalie Stone

Hello Mrs. Silverstone is a drama told through phone conversations that treads the line between the comic and tragic. The piece revolves around a stubborn and eccentric elderly woman with dementia, Mrs.Silverstone, who is never seen on stage. With the wrong number for her son and no short term memory, she begins to unwittingly communicate with a family of strangers, unaware of the major part she is playing in their lives.

A Sunday Roast by Anna Poole

A Sunday Roast is the stylistic exploration of the entrapping nature of routine. The play juxtaposes two routines in Adelaide’s life: Sunday roasts with the in-laws and in-depth counseling sessions. After the miscarriage of her first child, a constant offstage presence from her past becomes the demon behind her perfect family façade. A Sunday Roast illustrates how freedom is defined only by self-made barriers.
