Event Description

TWO WORKSHOPS AND A PERFORMANCE

As his two-year Leverhulme Research Fellowship – in which he traces histories of performance making in Cardiff in the late 1960s/early 1970s – reaches its conclusion, Mike Pearson presents two public workshops and a performance.

WORKSHOP 1 – 1974

Chapter Studio, Cardiff

Tuesday 24/Wednesday 25/Thursday 26 June, 7-9pm

A participatory ‘how to do it’ workshop held over three evenings to create a short physical performance using Cardiff Laboratory Theatre’s techniques from 1974: a snapshot of the past.

3 sessions of 2 hours. For participants of all abilities

(Please just turn up; wear/bring suitable clothing)

WORKSHOP 2 – 2014

Chapter Studio, Cardiff

Tuesday 1/Wednesday 2/Thursday 3 July, 7-9pm

[Age 60+ (though we might stretch a point for participants of 50+)]

A participatory ‘how to do it’ workshop held over three evenings to create a short physical performance using contemporary techniques. For performers and all others over 60 years of age: with hopes for great happenings.

It won’t be too strenuous – working at your own pace.

3 sessions of 2 hours.

(Please just turn up; wear/bring suitable clothing)

Both workshops are presented in Chapter Studio – once ‘The Gym’ – where Cardiff Laboratory Theatre, of which Mike Pearson was a member, was based in the 1970s.

PERFORMANCE THE LESSON OF ANATOMY (1974/2014)

Mike Pearson

Theatre/Theatr 2, Sherman Cymru, Cardiff

Saturday 5 July 2014, 8.00pm

On 5 July 1974, the newly founded Cardiff Laboratory for Theatrical Research (later Cardiff Laboratory Theatre) presented The Lesson of Anatomy in the Sherman Arena, Cardiff during that theatre’s opening season. The performance was inspired by and included texts that Antonin Artaud wrote in the final two years of his life: a stinging indictment of institutional psychiatry, a tirade against social injustice and a reflection upon his own physical anguish.

On 5 July 2014, Mike Pearson recreates his solos from The Lesson of Anatomy – forty years to the day and in the same venue, now Sherman Cymru Theatre/Theatr 2.

A rare and fascinating glimpse of ‘experimental theatre’ from a time when anything seemed possible. And a poignant reminder of the impacts of ageing, as Mike attempts the original choreography.
