Event Description

An interactive and informative workshop for anyone who would like to take a show to a fringe festival.

Do you have a great idea for a show, but no idea how to progress? Come along and explore the nuts and bolts of taking a show to the Fringe.

The workshop will include: which fringe / why / choosing a venue / planning / finance and some top marketing tips.

The workshop is delivered by Nicola Haydn.

Nicola Haydn is the Artistic Director of Otherplace in Brighton and has been managing fringe venues since 2005. Otherplace are the team behind The Warren pop-up Brighton Fringe Festival multi-venue site and Otherplace at the Basement which is a year-round arts venue.

She is also a performer, director, and teacher.

Thousands of performers take work to Fringe Festivals nationally and internationally every year. Edinburgh Fringe is the biggest arts festival in the world and provides a fantastic opportunity for artists from all backgrounds across all genres to showcase their work. Brighton Fringe (the largest festival in England) also provides a great opportunity to artists but at a fraction of the financial risk. It is a great place to dip your toe in the water, and experience all the positives that Fringe Festivals offer and can be seen as a great testing ground for your work en route to Edinburgh.

Brighton has long established itself as a favourite destination among performers. Show runs are generally shorter than Edinburgh (average show plays 3-5 nights) and Brighton is easily accessible from London, which means some artists can commute.

Reasons why you might take the plunge:

  • You are a performer/producer/director/writer/designer – get your work showcased as part of an exciting fringe programme.
  • Networking – hang out with producers, programmers, other artists and potential collaborators.
  • Get your work reviewed / get the press interested in you and the work that you make / get noticed.
  • Fringe festivals are the ultimate training ground – for you to experience making, producing, promoting and performing.
