Event Description

We are working to make the festival a permanent annual fixture, building on the gathering momentum of performing arts culture in Cardiff.

The festival prioritises maximum accessibility for audiences and companies alike, promoting an inclusive and nurturing environment where audiences can experience work from both the most raw and most sophisticated ends of the theatrical spectrum. Artists at different stages of their career will be able to mix and learn from each other, and will not be exposed to the financial risk associated with venue hire. Venues will benefit from the publicity and footfall the festival will bring. This unique collaboration across venues and companies will operate within a financially sustainable model that will bring both cultural enrichment and revenue to the city.

Now to the specifics of this year’s festival. Taking place from the 20th to the 25th of June, work will be presented across seven venues from ten of the most exciting theatre companies in the South West.  The host venues are Ten Feet Tall, Chapter Arts Centre, Little Man Coffee Co., AJ’s Coffee House, Jacob’s Market, Dempseys and CF24 Project.

The name of the game is variety. Plenty of new writing is being premiered alongside the more established work of award-winning playwrights like Barney Norris and David Greig.

As already mentioned, a key principle of the fringe is to provide high quality affordable entertainment, so although the ticket prices vary depending on the piece, the average ticket price is £5.

"There's plenty of high end theatre on offer in Cardiff, but we wanted to offer something a bit more gritty and affordable. We took inspiration from the Edinburgh Fringe, where pretty much every pub, coffee shop and venue is transformed into a performance space. Hopefully that'll be Cardiff one day." - Joe Burke, Venue Liaison Officer, Cardiff Fringe Team.
