Mametz

The second show in National Theatre Wales' Year of Surprises... This large-scale, site-specific production performed in an ancient woodland near Usk, Monmouthshire, will give audiences a vivid glimpse into life – and death – in the trenches and battlefields of the Somme.

Inspired by Welsh writer Owen Sheers’ poem Mametz Wood, it will draw on written material by the poets who fought in or witnessed one of the war’s bloodiest conflicts - the Battle of Mametz Wood, in which 4,000 of the the 38th (Welsh) Division were killed or wounded.

Mametz is co-commissioned by National Theatre Wales and 14-18 NOW, WW1 Centenary Art Commissions, supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and the Heritage Lottery Fund.

24th June - 5th July

agree Jackie some very memorable moments, loved the outdoors indoors and the actor who played the young poet - what a talent!!!

MY short review that I posted on my Facebook:

Saw Mametz last night. I'm not very good at giving feedback, but this was brilliant! So many memorable moments, heart breaking especially at the thought of so many wasted young lives.

Two stand out moments for me, which I will never forget and will be ingrained on my memory for the rest of my days are:

The audience follows the lads 'over the top' and across no mans land. Shelling, machine gunfire, and the sounds of rats. For a minuscule moment I understood what it must have been like for those poor young men to walk into carnage (expect I was safe). The sounds were horrifying, I could feel the earth tremble, my heart was bloody racing, and this was just a play.

The second moment was when the principle cast acted out in unision the hand to hand combat and their deaths that followed. Jeez, harrowing.

The production values were excellent, the cast were excellent. I wish I could see it again. Well done National Theatre Wales!

Our Mametz cast visited Cardiff Castle to learn how to use their rifles ahead of the production opening.

I've written a blog on my Great Grandfather, who fought in WWI with the South Wales Borderers
