PARALLEL LINES by KATHERINE CHANDLER

Parallel Lines by Katherine Chandler is the winner of the 2012 Wales Drama Award. 

Dirty Protest present the premiere of this award winning play in partnership with Chapter in November 2013.

SUMMARY

Steph is 15 years old. Simon is her teacher. Both live in Cardiff but their parallel lives couldn't be more different. When an accusation is made and their worlds collide, things aren't as simple as they might seem.

 

Award-winning playwright Katherine Chandler explores truth, class and power in contemporary Wales in this gripping, uncompromising play.

Dirty Protest is Wales' national new writing fringe company. Projects in 2013 include a summer tour of new plays to the Almeida Theatre, the Royal Court Theatre and Latitude Festival, and Dirty, Gifted and Welsh, a festival of new writing with National Theatre Wales. Launched in 2007, Dirty Protest has worked with more than 100 Welsh writers, staging sell-out plays in venues from pubs and clubs, to kebab shops, hairdressers and a forest.

CASTING BREAKDOWN

South Wales base preferred but will consider actors with a connection to Wales who are based elsewhere. 

Auditions will take place in Chapter, Cardiff between Monday 16 - Wednesday 18 September.

STEPH 

Steph is a 15 year old, school girl. Working class Cardiff and feisty. Older than her years. Bright but damaged. Trying to make sense of the world. Likes – The night. Truth. Dislikes – A fuss.

JULIA 

Julia is 30-35 years old,  an English literature school teacher. Attractive, educated, middle class. Married to Simon and trying desperately to stay that way.  Likes – Waitrose. Correct use of apostrophes. Dislikes – Jeggings.

MELISSA 

Melissa is 30–35 years old. A single mum to Steph. Still got it and knows how to use it, working class Cardiff. Struggles to understand her teenage daughter.  Likes – Having a laugh with her mates. Dislikes – Port and lemon (Christmas 97’)

SIMON 

Simon is 30-40 years old, a Maths teacher. Attractive, educated, middle class. Married to Julia and trying desperately to stay that way. Likes – his dressing gown. Poppies. Dislikes – Woolworths mugs.

AGREEMENT

£420 per week fee. 

PRODUCTION DETAILS

Rehearsals: 28th October - 15th November 2013 in Chapter, Cardiff.

Tech rehearsals: 18th - 20th November 2013 in Chapter, Cardiff.

Production venue: Chapter, Main Theatre.

Production dates: 20th - 30th November (no shows on Sun 24 Nov) at 7.30pm.

Saturday matinees: 23th and 30th November at 2.30pm.
