CASTING BREAKDOWN

 

This piece focuses on the First World War and the Battle of the Somme in 1916, where a number of Welsh Battalions were decimated and inparticular on two welsh poets who were in that battle.

 

The actors will need to be good singers and fit and happy to work with a movement director. 

 

As with all National Theatre Wales productions, actorssubmitted must be one of the following:

1) Welsh

2) Wales based (working and residing permanently in Wales, but not necessarily Welsh)

3) Trained professionally in Wales

 

PRODUCTION DATES:

Rehearsals start: Monday 19th May 2014

Previews: 24th and 25th June 2014

Press Night: 26th June 2014

Final Performance: 5th July 2014

 

LOCATION: Usk, Monmouthshire

 

CHARACTERS:

 

OLDER WYN(male)

Mid 40s. Poet. Looking back on his time in the trenches, reflective, narrator. Educated North Welsh via years of work in London.

All actors should have strong singing voices if possible.

ANY ETHNICITY

 

YOUNGER WYN (male)

Mid 20s. Poet. Will take on his story in the dramatised scenes of 1916. Slim, intelligent.

All actors should have strong singing voices if possible.

ANY ETHNICITY

 

DAVID (male)

Poet. Early 20s but looks much younger. Welsh of identity but raised and accented in Brockley, London, so may need to do a London/ cockney accent.

All actors should have strong singing voices if possible.

ANTOINETTE (female)

20s. Antoinette, a young French girl – she is the daughter of a gamekeeper her character arc is representative of what happens to the French countryside – its destruction and corruption.

All actors should have strong singing voices if possible.

YOUNG SOLDIER A (male)

Playing age 18-25. Young soldier A – Aneurin, Dick, Siegfried

All actors should have strong singing voices if possible.

ANY ETHNICITY

 

YOUNG SOLDIER B (male)

Playing age 18 – 25. Young soldier B – Dai, Ivor.

All actors should have strong singing voices if possible.

ANY ETHNICITY

 

YOUNG SOLDIER C (male)

Playing age 18 – 25. Young soldier C – Ellis, John.

All actors should have strong singing voices if possible.

ANY ETHNICITY

 

OLDER SOLDIER D (male)

Mid 50s. Older soldier D – to play the following roles: Tour Guide, Generals.

All actors should have strong singing voices if possible.

ANY ETHNICITY

 

OLDER SOLDIER E (male)

Early 40s, Older Soldier E – Kinjack, Taylor, Willem (Accents – Dutch, English, Welsh).

All actors should have strong singing voices if possible.

ANY ETHNICITY

Casting in Cardiff from 17th & 18th March and in London from w/c 24th March.
