What I do:
Retired drama teacher and Drama GCSE Moderator
A little more about me:
In 1991 I wrote and directed "Beowulf comes to Tiger Bay" which was showcased in the "Olivier". In '92 I worked as a writer in residence for Ebbw Vale Garden Festival. In '93 I was dramatist in residence at Risca Primary and wrote and directed "Odyssey Islwyn" which interwove history, oral history, myth and fiction and was performed by over 200 pupils. Then in 1994 I returned to full time teaching. In 1997/98 I wrote and directed a musical adaptation of "Hard Times" in conjunction with James Williams. It was a school production involving over 150 pupils with a large element of circus (I like multi-media projects and collaboration). Unfortunately after that I found the increasing demands of the education bureaucracy and exam system left little time for creative projects. I'm a socialist and Buddhist (of the humanist variety).
Location:
Cardiff
Projects I’m working on:
At the moment I'm writing a play about Barry (Vale of Glamorgan) which interweaves its industrial, economic and urban history with the myth of St Baruch and a contemporary doomed love interest. The history starts from 1860 up to present day (with the exception of Baruch) and the relationship between the young lovers, which is quite dysfunctional, brings in issues of abuse, addiction and poverty. It sounds bleak but the female character embodies hope and a commitment to community, which is also evidenced in the characters of her grandparents who also link to the past. My aim is to celebrate Barry's history as "Coal capital of the world" and to focus on cultural regeneration. My inspiration re the structure of the play was Caryl Churchill. I'm working in very loose collaboration with a Barry performing arts group called "Superstars in the Making" and am hoping we can stage the play in Barry Memorial Hall. At the moment I've written half the play but there is no funding as yet to cover costs (I don't need any personal funding as I have a good pension).

“Barry Born and Beautiful”

I am halfway through writing a play – working title “Barry Born and Beautiful”.

It interweaves fact, fiction and myth presenting snapshots of Barry's industrial and urban history (from 1860 to present day) juxtaposed with the unravelling of a dsyfunctional relationship. The doomed love interest brings in issues of abuse, drug addiction, welfare sanctions and homelessness - sounds grim!! But…
