Event Description

A Warm Welcome to All – relaxed performances from start to finish.

Access Symposium

PARK AND DARE THEATRE, Treorci, CF42 6NL
Fri 28th February 2020

Are you relaxed about relaxed performances? Do you know your quiet spaces from your Sonic Story?
Welcome to Taking Flight's 5th Access Symposium, hosted by RCT Theatres and in collaboration with hynt. Funded by Arts Council of Wales.

This symposium will explore all elements of creating the warmest of welcomes for everyone - especially for those people who may find traditional theatre etiquette a barrier.

In the morning Jess Thom, co-founder of Touretteshero, will present 'A Warmer Welcome - Relaxed performances from Start to Finish' on the theory and practice of relaxed performances.

Touretteshero is an innovative disabled-led company that uses humour and creativity to campaign for social justice and inclusivity.

With over twenty years of experience supporting disabled people within the arts, join them for a workshop that shares the theory and practice behind Relaxed Performances. Learn more about how to make work accessible to neurodivergent people and others for whom the traditions of theatre etiquette might be a barrier. This workshop is for anyone interested in creating a more inclusive and accessible cultural sector. The session will have a practical focus and will include presentations, activities and discussions.

In the afternoon Derby theatre's Access Manager Andrew Tinley will present on 'The Barrier isn't Access'- an exploration of simple, effective tools to make venues more relaxed in their engagement with artists, young people, staff and audiences. Delegates will leave with practical ways to make changes in their organisation or artistic practice.

Andrew Tinley is currently Front Of House and Access Manager at Derby Theatre and has worked in regional theatres and arts venues for the past 10 years. Andrew is committed to ensuring that accessibility and inclusivity is embedded within the culture of an organisation in all aspects of their engagement.

Andrew also volunteers for the Alzheimer’s Society as a Dementia Friend Champion and runs regular sessions across the Midlands.

This is an all-day event. Tea and coffee will be provided. Tickets are available from https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/taking-flight-theatre-company

Tickets for organisations are £50 plus booking fee and for individuals £20 plus booking fee.
