I MERLIN – PRESS RELEASE

In the early 80’s two students met while studying at The Royal Welsh Music and Drama College in Cardiff. One on the drama side and the other on the music side. Thirty three years later the drama student gets an email from the music student asking if he’d like to direct a musical she had written. That is how actor/director Ieuan Rhys and musician/composer Katherine Cole reunited after many a year.

The musical ‘I Merlin And The Lady Of Flowers’ by Katherine Cole and Jane King is an adaptation of Blodeuwedd’s story from the Mabinogion. Where a lady of flowers is created by Gwydion especially for Llew Llaw Gyffes as he is unable to marry a human being due to the curse set on him by his mother Arianrhod.

It is a classic retelling of a classical Celtic myth expressed beautifully through 21st century music.

Love, lust, owls and eagles illustrate the story, with Merlin himself as the wise narrator, all expressed in soaring song and original words.

The cast consists of the  many amateur actors from the Penarth/Cardiff area with a few from further afield – Swansea and Neath.

Merlin is played by Dan Lambert – recently seen on BBC4 with Rod Gilbert and Midge Ure in ‘The UK’s Best Part-Time Band as guitarist and vocalist with the group Johhny Cage & The Voodoogroove.

“We have a great show and a great cast” says director Ieuan Rhys  -best known for his acting roles in Pobol Y Cwm, Gwaith Cartref, Doctor Who and The Englishman Who Went Up A Hill....

“We have to rely on people’s dedication to Kath and the show” he says “as Night Owl Theatre are producing this show with no financial backing”

Rehearsals are going well – meeting every Sunday at the Church Hall in Penarth. A cast of 23 – adults, teenagers  and children. Some are old hands at amateur dramatics where a few are performing for the very first time.

“It’s a thrill for the cast” says Ieuan “ to be performing at the Weston Studio in the Wales Millennium Centre. Such an illustrious venue”

Three shows will be performed at The Weston Studio. Saturday July 9th  and twice on Sunday July 10th.

Tickets are available from the Box Office – 02920 636464
