'The actor’s work on attention, awareness and active imagination: between phenomenology, cognitive science and practices of acting'

Phillip Zarrilli
A lecture to celebrate the department's 40th birthday by Phillip Zarrilli, one of the most important practitioners, trainers and theorists on acting in the world.
Building from Zarrilli's 2010 'outstanding book of the year' (ATHE award, USA) for Psychophysical Acting, as well as his contributions to the recently released, Acting: psychophysical phenomenon and process (intercultural and interdisciplinary perspectives), this actor-friendly lecture will take us on a journey toward a ‘phenomenology of acting’ for the 21st century that takes account of exciting recent developments that combine post-Merleau-Ponty phenomenology, cognitive science, and enactment theory. Based on Zarrilli's own career-long practice as an actor, director, and actor-trainer, the lecture will use an actor-training exercise to discuss how and why new perspectives from cognitive science and phenomenology shed new light on the actor's work. The talk will end with a specific example of how Zarrilli, as an actor in The Echo Chamber, utilizes the kind of attention and awareness discussed in his talk when performing.

Professor Zarrilli will present his lecture on 12 March 2014 at 5.00 p.m. in the Emily Davies Studio. Tickets (free) available from 3 March 2014 from the Departmental Office if the Department of Theatre Film and Television Studies Aberystwyth University: tfts@aber.ac.uk.
