Event Description

International author and lecturer JS Hartley will be delivering Theatre Versus Oppression workshopsthis Summer with a focus on understanding and interpreting body language and managing conflict. The workshops are ideal for those wanting to learn techniques and knowledge on body language, managing conflict situations and performance techniques.

Course Info:
You will be taken through various Theatre of the Oppressed/Boal techniques for acting and devising.   Characterisation and staging methods are studied and applied practically throughout. The need to understand the subtext and the real life of character are emphasised through development outside of the confines of a play.  Participants will adapt invisible, image, and rainbow exercises for rehearsal techniques and will leave with an arsenal of techniques to apply both individually and as an ensemble in future productions. Over three days the participants will use the techniques to devise a piece and be shown how in just three days a full length production can be ready for performance.

N.B. For those interested in performing there will be the possibility to perform this piece as an ensemble to the public. Others may wish to stay on to see it staged as audience members.

Friday 4 - Sunday 6 July (3 day course)
10am to 5pm
£200

Feedback from our January 2014 courses:
“It totally met my expectations and more. Building the Confession bit by bit helped me realise that I’m able to create a story even if I don’t know at the start how it’s going to end. It also showed me that I can change my character and feel comfortable in that character even if it’s very different to how I would normally behave. Overall, I found it incredibly creatively freeing and I can see how it will help me in so many areas of my creative life.”

“The course certainly met my expectations, and I absolutely loved learning comprehensively about an entirely different mode of theatrical practice. I’ll certainly aspire to use the methods and exercises taught to us with my own work.”
