Mila goes missing after an explosion rips open Edinburgh’s Grassmarket. The young girl’s foster mother clings to the wreckage of a burnt out caravan while searching for clues about the girl’s disappearance. Mila has run away and hopes to stay safe by giving a stalker the slip in cafe toilets. As Fringe actors fill up the festival city it’s hard for the girl to spot a dangerous face in the crowd. The family are put at a greater risk of homelessness after Mila’s foster father goes back to his old haunts after prison. Will Mila come home to her foster mother for the family to be put on the list for a council flat before she turns 16? As her foster mother tries to keep a roof over her head, Mila discovers an unusual ally and finds time for tea.
Lives of Grassmarket people are dramatised in a story based on the Cowgate fire: Single spark that devastated heart of Edinburgh. The Old Town would never be the same again after the huge blaze on December 7, 2002.
