Last year I had a one minute play performed in a festival in Noo Yawk, so here's a (borrowed) idea: a writers' self-indulgence, sorry - festival, of very short works where the only thing in common from one piece to the next is a limited number of key stroke characters [stage directions and musical annotations included]. The compendium of works would be an extraordinary clash of ideas... A play with 200 characters, anybody?

Yes it is very addictive...and challenging...a great exercise.
What a great proposal

Like Hemingway's six word story.

When reading I visualised such striking images. If the theatre event was to come to fruition i think it would be great to get the material also on to film, its editing would prove a very interesting exercise!
Thanks Caroline; and for the link to the six word stories. We are in the land between sketch and poetry where pictures tell the story. Why not do a 200 character film treatment of one of the pieces? TVx
I know there are some other writers out there who have said they'll paddle in the 200 character shallows. I'm looking forward to seeing more and different approaches and topics. Meanwhile, I can't do a long journey without my mind starting me off on a new adventure. Have a look at this one.

CELL

Sc. 1

7G5/B:
Dear Ms M; many thanks for your letter.
Yes, it is lonely here.
As to the nature of my crimes: this is for a later date...

Sc. 2

M:
It's perfect! All the romance and danger, without actually having to touch him!

(A doorbell rings)
I want more
A work of genius!
Hi all, this was lots of fun and kept me from doing my real work. my word count tells me it's 200 characters.

A MAN SITS AT HIS DESK.

M: I can’t do this.

A VOICE BOOMS OUT.

V: Do it gently.

THE MAN TYPES SLOWLY.

V: Faster. Go on, go on. GO ON.

HE TYPES AS FAST AS HE CAN.

M: YES!

V: Read it.

HE PULLS THE PAGE OUT OF THE TYPEWRITER AND READS.

M: bhosfhdgt… It’s crap.

Looking forward to the premier. x
Great stuff, Ian.
I think I might have done the premiere myself back in the days when I still had a typewriter. Well done.

Here's another one for the collection:

1 IN FRONT OF A VAST CROWD

1: It’s our choice - either we change our lives
C: Boo!
1: Or we’re all going to die
C: Boring!
1: We need to act now

CROWD KILLS 1

ANOTHER 1 TAKES 1’s PLACE

REPEAT UNTIL ALL DEAD

Cheers
David
