"In the first year's programme of the National Theatre Wales we will focus on a 'theatrical mapping' of the country. Opening one new show a month, every month for a year, each show in a different location; and yet we are as likely to make a show on the main stage of a theatre building or in a miners' institute as we are to create site-specific work in a warehouse or an old church.Location isn't just about site, it's about how our memories live in geography and space." John McGrath Rapid Response New Welsh Review Autumn 2009

As part of my PhD research project into NTW I would like to discuss 'location' and 'located performance'. Can anyone offer any further definitions or explanations of either of these terms?

Thanks Alan, a very useful answer. Particularly the idea that the meaning might lie in us and not the location, I would be interested to hear more on this. Also, how might the proposition of shared understanding of a specific location be problematic?
