As the programme set up by Watershed/ACW/NTW is named as for digital producers, I'm wondering what you mean by that? In the experiences that I've had, I've been responsible for both the multiplatform design (user engagement design/interaction design) and the production (getting tech in, setting things up, operating etc). My experiences of theatre have been that there is quite a distinction between artists and producers, the latter who are involved in the resourcing and workflows, to support the artists. But no such distinction has existed in the work I've done on digital interaction within theatre, and there really aren't that many resources available to get separate people in for design and production. Really, this is a question about the scope of the programme, but perhaps also one for the field in general.

Hi Tom,

Good question. As a starting point, there's a really good book, a couple of years old now, called The Producers, Alchemists of The Impossible which is worth having a look at, as it outlines the role of the producer from the perspective of several leading producers in the UK. http://the-producers.org/ Building on from that, I'd say that in a really simplistic view, a digital producer is a producer who has a particular interest in projects that are digital.

I get your point though, and it's worth saying that the labs are open to applicants from all creative sectors. I'm hoping that the applicants will be a range of people from self-identifying Digital Producers (established and emerging) through to individuals working in digital who have an interest in learning more about Producing, and Producers, who have an interest in Digital. The principle of the labs is around peer to peer learning, so a mix of applicants is great to really spark an interesting week.

Hope that helps.
