Actors & Extras Wanted: Short Film "The Market"

Actors & extras wanted for a short film being produced and shot on location in Pontypridd over several days in February.

Hi, I'm a student filmmaker in my final year at the Atrium, Cardiff. I am producing and directing a Short Film based on a short story called Voices written by myself several years ago. The film has the running title of "The Market". It is a fictional piece, a dark comedy style paranoia film. If your familiar with the films "The Wickerman" (1970), "Hot Fuzz" (2007) and "The Truman Show" (1998) you'll be familiar with the idea that everyone in the story is in on the act except the main character.

The piece has little dialogue and will rely on highly expressive actors, the main character needs to show fear, panic, stress, the others, anger, venom, predatory looks, all the characters in this film are essentially actors playing actors (akin to the truman show) who only at the very end break character and then back as if nothing happened.

Actors required:

Starring Role: Male16-25, Scott Evans is a habitual thief, his character is unredeemable, he doesn't see the light at the end of the film, he is main role in the film and although he is the victim of the story he is also the only bad guy. Actor needs to be highly expressive, this will give a visual challenge for them as they get across fear, paranoia etc. Little dialogue throughout the film so an emotionally visual person is required.

Security guard: Male or female: preferably older than the main character but physically fit, again expressive visually as the character says only a few words, this character is devious, the instigator, they chase the main character herded (by extras) into the market.

Spirit of the Market: One of the key visuals in this film is to separate the main character not only by his lack of moral code but also by age. All the stall owners/customers are older than him, giving a sense of the generational gap between them and also the sense of community than there doesn't seem to be in younger generations.

The Spirit is an elderly person, preferably pensioner age (male or female) who is a visual representation of the spirit of the market's former glory. They appear and disappear several times during the film as if a ghost following the thief around the indoor market.

-----

Extras: As many extras as I can get my hands on really. Any age or gender, preferably older than the main character (not too important). This is an opportunity for an acting credit, something for the portfolio. There is a zombie style scene at the end of the film where everyone in shot breaks character and starts to walk slowly towards the main character for the final psychological push.

There is something for everyone in this film for those who want a challenge with visual acting to those looking for some beginning experience on a location. There will be a screening of the film once finished for the actors/friends and family and everyone involved will get a copy of the film itself once completed.

As mentioned I'm a student so there is isn't a budget all roles are unfortunately unpaid but it is ideal for those wanting the experience to use their skills as actors. I will at the very least feed everyone on set though, so you won't starve:)

Synopsis:

Scott is an unredeemable habitual thief, he has little to no morals about who he steals from and what he takes. It's all for profit and drugs. On this day he is caught stealing and chased out of a local store by security into the indoor market, He hides thinking he's escaped, but this is where his real problems begin. Something feels wrong, stall owners, customers stare at him, he blinks and their not looking his way. An elderly person, appears and disappears as if a ghost following him where ever he tries to hide.

Things get worse and worse as panic, paranoia and absolute fear consume him, is what he seeing real or just in his head. Events come to ahead and they all close in on him, where the ghost appears once more. His mind flips and he's last seen screaming running through the doors. The film ends with the security guard watching from his shop as the thief runs past his shop panic written on his pale face. He smiles, satisfied that another miscreant wont come near Pontypridd again... he turns... spies another shoplifter in the act... he smiles, lifting his radio to his mouth... places people.

------

The idea is to get across the notion that the market and the shops around it have had enough of thieves and without physically hurting/killing them they decided to with high organisation between multiple people give them a paranoia trip, where drug addled minds will be so scared they never want to come back to Pontypridd ever again, scared out of their wits. The end scene is to reveal that this isn't the first time they've done this and it won't be the last.

------

Initial production meeting will be held at the beginning of February, filming dates will be confirmed (no more than 4 days in February)

Hi,

I have previously been involved in Student Filming, depending on availability I'd be willing to be involved, as I live in Tonypandy, not too far from Pontypridd.

Cheers,

Linda :)
