Day 101 - Ianto Jones Shrine - The Bay, Cardiff

There is always something strangely compelling about road side shrines. Something deeply personal passes between the mourners and the departed when they leave floral tributes and cards at the scene of an accident, and yet there is something overtly public about the act. An open demonstration of grief and emotion that is rare in british society, or at least in my own experience. The flowers and gifts stand in for an action that cannot be witnessed by the uniformed passer by and can only operate on the level of imagination. I began to read the tributes, something that felt somehow inappropriate, bordering on voyeurism, even though the tribute is within the public domain. As I read, I learnt more and more about Ianto and the love that people from all over the world seemed to have for him. For Ianto Jones is a fictional character, from the BBC tv series Torchwood. A fact, that upon discovery, made the experience all the more disturbing....
