Hello all,
After a very successful press night at Sherman Cymru on Monday, the reviews of A Provincial Life are emerging.
Paul Taylor at The Independent gives it four stars, and calls it "a masterly production":
"The play is a beautifully empathetic version of a long short story by Chekhov... Highly recommended."
In The Times, Sam Marlowe also gives it four stars, and writes"
"What he [Gill] delivers is characteristically restrained, delicate, muted, and yet far from restrained emotionally... It rewards attentiveness with a simple truthfulness that's desolately sad, yet never without compassion. It is an elegent, gently wounding elegy for time and love left to waste.
"It's a compelling picture of human struggle and confusion; unsettling and absorbing."
The Stage praises the choice of text - "National Theatre Wales has done us great service in bringing it back to our attention" - and cast members - "the warm performances of Lee Haven-Jones (Boris Ivanov Blagovo), William Thomas (Andrey Ivanov) and Alex Clatworthy".
It concludes:
"Misail [the protagonist] says that 'Nothing can pass without leaving a trace and that everything we do, however small, has significance in our present and in our future.' A Provincial Life is sure to leave a lasting impression upon all who view it."
More reviews should be published in the coming days - we'll keep you posted!
