As part of her Platfform project theatre-maker Ellen Groves is researching and developing a show about birthday parties. For and with 5 – 9 year olds and produced by Theatr Iolo as part of Platfform. Ellen is now looking for an ensemble of 3 – 4 performers to join her on this mission and to work with her to devise and develop ideas over the next few months. She will be using this two-day workshop as an informal audition opportunity to find those artists.

This two-day audition workshop, led by story-teller Jon Kidd, is an invitation to performers interested in joining Ellen to learn more about this area of performance.

You can find out more about Ellen and the Platfform programme here: http://goo.gl/fj4Hfc

And on the blog, here: http://platfform.cymru ;

There is a maximum of 15 places available. To book your place please send your professional CV and information (no longer than a paragraph) on why you would like  to attend to Platfform Producer Olivia Harris at olivia@theatriolo.com.

What will happen over the two days?

In this practical two-day audition workshop, participants will learn more about and develop their understanding and skills in improvisational story-telling. Participants will also learn improvisational comedy techniques, all in the context of making theatre for young audiences. The two days will be structured to build skills and try things out in improvisational story-telling on day one before looking at this in the context of comedy theatre on day two. For this reason, participants need to be available for both days.

The only thing participants need to bring is a bottle of water and comfortable clothes to move around in.

The workshop will be led by improvisational storyteller Jon Kidd. Here’s a bit more information about Jon:

Jon has a keen interest in exploring new routes to creating stories, a large part of which is truly remaining open to ideas that might lead you on a journey you could never have envisaged yourself. Story creation has become a world of bizarre and wonderful possibilities to play with as each retelling changes, and pushes us in new directions.

Having trained as a musician in Edinburgh, Jon’s focus on participatory performing arts has grown through his steep transition into theatre. Working with organisations such as National Youth Theatre Wales, Hijinx Theatre (Cardiff), Flying Cloud Theatre (London/York) and Taking Flight Theatre (Cardiff), Age Cymru - cARTrefu and most recently launching his own company Commusication, he has continued to grow and develop his practice through working with diverse groups.

Who can Attend?

This audition workshop is open to performers and artists with some experience in any of the following areas:

  • Improvisation
  • Story-telling
  • Devising
  • Comedy
  • Creating theatre for young audiences

Ellen will be working on the project between April – July (exact dates TBC) so selected performers will need to have some availability during this time. The project will be taking place in Cardiff, predominately at Chapter Arts Centre.

Deadline: midday, Tuesday 15 March

NOTES:

*If you fancy being a part of the workshop but are not interested in being part of the ensemble, that’s fine too! Just make sure you let us know beforehand.

*Should you be selected from the workshop to join the birthday party team you will be paid a standard fee once the project starts.
