JMK Directors - Opportunity to Collaborate

With RWCMD BA2 Designers on a conceptual design for a contemporary play in a studio theatre space.

This project is an opportunity for emerging Directors to work with Royal Welsh College Designers within a professionally collaborative process on exciting design responses to challenging contemporary plays chosen by the Director. This is also an opportunity to develop Director/Designer working relationships to take forward into professional theatre environments.

The Directors receive feedback and guidance from a JMK Director Practitioner. The Designers receive teaching and mentoring from RWCMD Design for Performance staff.

The Directors will present their chosen plays and ideas to the designers initiating questions and discussions before pairing up as director and designer collaborators. The plays presented will be made available to the Designers prior to the first meeting.

The Directors and Designers will collaborate to produce designs for a play communicated through process work – research images; sketch books; storyboards; digital boards; sketch models; costume sketches, an interim and finished 1:25 scale model with scale figures in a model box; prop and furniture drawings where appropriate, a 1:25 scale ground plan showing any set changes and rendered finished costume designs.

The Directors and Designers will create a mutually agreed schedule of meetings outside of the formally agreed presentation points. These should be at least once a week during the project period.

The formal presentation points are to the whole group in a discursive learning environment.

The formal schedule of presentation points is (everyone to be present):

  • Presentation of plays and ideas by directors and pairing of creative teams. Monday 4th November at 10am, RWCMD.
  • Presentation of initial ideas on Monday 11th November at 10am, RWCMD Design studio.
