on Camouflage, and American cartoons

the intention of this note is to discuss how cartoons have become a dominant form media in the 21st century
it is a short note that may be elaborated in a later time.

one of the most recognizable figures in american culture is Homer Simpson he along with others exist alongside other fictional characters which my generation has grown up with. Older generations my see this as a symbol of an immature generation, this might be true. Just take a look in the Argos catalog. the best barometer of British consumer trends, and one will find the expanding sector of adult novelty's increasing with every new edition of the amazing book.1 but this process of using childish mediums to cater to different ages is not a isolated event. during the 2nd world war american forces and public where shown films by the first motion picture unit. A unit made up entirely by motion picture personnel who operated between 1943 to 1945. Nearly all of the films were instructional, and covered a broad range of subject, from how to resist interrogation, to how to fly a B-29. They often starred celebrities of the times. in this the first motion picture unit refined the skill of putting together an instructional film which many a 1st day employees now have to endure when starting a new job. the first motion picture unit made cartoons as well as films. one of the most popular was Private SNAFU.2 a GI whose own crippling stupidity was often the death of him. along side Technical Fairy, First Class SNAFU would be taught the practical rights and wrongs of working in the field intersected with drawings of nude women and bawdy humor. it's intention was to teach even the most thick headed gis some of the basic skills that were needed to survive through the war. some of warner bothers great cartoonists worked on SNAFU. and the quality of its writing is attributed by Theodor Seuss Geisel or dr. Seuss as he was later known. what the first motion picture unit achieved with was a effective from of mass visual communication, which could deliver propaganda , inform and entertain often simultaneously. and this is the development in my mind the ability to deliver complex information using a cheap and crude medium is a hall mark of american culture3 we live in a culture were complex information exists daily and signs and symbols can be used sophisticatedly. these developments have occurred over time 4 maybe we can't stop our strings begin pulled by toothpaste adverts and shoe shops. But maybe we can feel more at home when these message are shown in a manner in which we can laugh at. the cartoon is a ridiculous medium but it the best camouflage for the nature of mankind in the 21st century .cartoons now are the most popular programs that deal with taboos. south park and anything that seth mc farlin has touched along side the programs of adult swim actively show talk or represent taboos. to take cartoons seriously undermines there role and the function they play in our culture.

1 my love for the Argos catalog and its records are for another note titled "Argos! the laminated book of dreams"
2 Situation Normal All Fucked Up
3 admittedly europe also has these processes but america did not have the concept of the avant guard ingrained
4 look up edward bernays Adam Curtis' has a great documentroy which talks about all of that stuff
