Mr. Home & Mr. Browning - Graig Du Theatre Players

This unusual one-act play, written by Melanie Adare, is another work under consideration. Daniel Dunglas Home was the foremost physical medium of the Victorian era. He had his major detractors, but no-one proved that he faked any of the strange phenomena that many emiment people witnessed. Robert Browning, the poet, was a sceptic, who felt that his wife, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, was being manipulated by Home. Elizabeth was firmly of the belief that Home's abilities were genuine. Browning, on the other hand, becomes obsessed by what he believes is Home's sleight of hand. He writes a venemous character study of Home in a poem called Mr. Sludge the Medium. Is Robert Browning's memory at fault as he thinks back to the afternoon of 1855 when Daniel Dunglas Home was invited to carry out a seance at their home? As Browning feels he may have been a little harsh with his criticism, the play opens with a half remembered conversation Browning had with Home before the seance begun.
