Yesterday was a split company rehearsal experience - whilst John, Sara B and most of the cast were working in one space, Sophie and I with Julie Hornsby and Jo Ross, our Sign language Interpreter extraordinaires, worked elsewhere with British Sign Language (BSL) and Sign performance expert Jean St Clair. I've worked with Jean a lot over the past ten years, so it was fantastic to have her involved in the process, on translations and creative interpretations, moving the script form English into signed performance.

Together we pose an interesting conundrum - a viz imp hearing writer who signs enthusiastically but eccentrically, collaborating closely with a Deaf performer/specialist who signs but doesn't use voice... Somehow, between Jean's expertise in reading Kaite O'Reilly Sign language (KORSL), and the generosity and skills of Sophie, Julie, and Jo, we made amazing progress. Julie has worked closely with The Fingersmiths Ltd, a bilingual performance company Jean and I founded with Jeni Draper in 2006, so her contribution was invaluable. When time is short and there's so much to do, an existing working relationship is a real gift...

Translation of photo: Jean calls time on Kaite's weird signing.

I am quite happy to be mistaken for Sarah T, though hopefully my coffee making is better! After a week of trying to keep up and take in everything that is going on in the rehearsal room today was my favourite day so far. It was mainly due to watching the creation of one piece of work from a very simple beginning to developing into a totally joyous and surprising performance. Made me so very gratefully to be working with such a talented group of people and seeing a real master at work. I am having such a fantastic time with everyone and every day brings something new, challenging and exciting, thank you!

Okay just read back my last comment... That's champagne for you...

It should of course have read... I thought I should respond etc....

I thoughts should respond to Sarah B's gossip..

The need for coffee may be a little exaggerated, although the facts she makes us coffee is much appreciated...
Tis true, I do like champagne of course but I am open to offers...
Nobody has had a Toole hug yet...
Not even going to think about Mats videos and I already know Mandy is not as innocent as she first appears..
Karina is just hard core

So, after a week and a bit I have to say how incredibly proud I am to be working with this group of people.. I am amazed every day by their skill and generosity of spirit in the rehearsal room. I feel like a very fortunate chap right now

Okay, enough of this sucking up. Looking forward to seeing where we go in the next few weeks...

@sarahthomas. It's all true - brush up your coffee skills or watch out!

Things I have learnt about the team of IWIW #NTW20 (some of which maybe true, others maybe not).

Nick and David NEED their coffee. David's only other liquid beverage is champagne, he refuses to drink anything else!

John likes strong coffee or you get sacked.

Sophie gives the best hugs ever

Mandy is not as innocent as she looks... ;-)

Katrina has been doing Circus Skills as well as the full days in rehearsal!

Don't ever look at Mat's videos on his phone.

That is all for now, I will provide more juicy gossip as the weeks go by....

Sarah (DSM) xx

Working on 'Switch On/Switch Off (After the Operation) - what means sound anyway?

Exploration of sound, gesture, and theatricalised sign working with six amazing actors and one fabulous performing 'terp..... (that's SLI - sign language interpreter to you).
