What I do:
Just recently I've been researching and reading plays by Welsh and Wales-based writers, for National Theatre Wales. I’ve been reminded that some of the most exhilarating, life affirming and rug pulling writing for the stage is in Wales - geographically, emotionally and culturally. I wish more of it was produced and would love to see emerging and established Welsh writers continue to be significantly and brilliantly involved in a whole range of new projects.
At the moment I’m directing a play for Chol Theatre, in Huddersfield, hence missing the NTW launch party, which I was really sad about. Other things this year include going back to India to work on a couple of new plays in Mumbai and Bangalore, working for the RSC, as a director on their national project for schools and young people and co-writing a book for Methuen called, something like, ‘Shakespeare and Young People’ (every meeting it changes, so not sure...). Having been hopeless at science in school, I am now fascinated, (although still a bit slow, especially when it comes to the long words), and I have spent the last few years dreaming up various collaborations between research scientists and theatre artists. For the Wellcome Trust I’m a member of the Society Committee and the consultant on their International Public Engagement conference, this year in India. I co-run a company with Jeff Teare and for the last few years this has concentrated on a project called Theatrescience, encouraging collaboration between playwrights and cutting edge scientists. Our next project is to produce 2 new plays at the Eden Project at the end of 2010. After leaving Cardiff for the bright lights of London in the late 90s, I worked for the English Shakespeare Company, then for the National Theatre before heading South West to the Theatre Royal Plymouth where I was Associate Director (Arts Development and Education), for 5 years. Despite the current climate, I adore being freelance, not least because I can do my shopping when no one else is! I am ridiculously excited about this new national theatre….
