If you haven't booked your place at Emergence in Cardiff this Thursday there is still time. Emergence is a one day conference on sustainability and the arts at Chapter Arts Centre on the 28th October, hosted by Cynnal Cymru-Sustain Wales at Chapter Arts Centre.

The day provides a unique opportunity to get together and see what we in the arts can do to respond to the global challenges we are now facing: from the environmental to the economic and (Fern Smith the organiser tells me) the spiritual! A great line-up of speakers and organisations (including National Theatre Wales) will be contributing to the day. Delegates so far include theatre practitioners, visual artists, writers, production managers, technicians, musicians, venue managers and funders.

The Welsh Assembly Government are asking all organisations and companies in Wales to make sustainability a 'core organising principle' of their work. What does this mean for artists and arts organisations? Fern tells me that public funding for the arts in Wales will in future increasingly be linked to achieving the vision of a One Planet Wales. How can free artistic expression be accommodated with government policy, however progressive it is? I will be discussing these issues with Hugh Charles of the Welsh Assembly Government.

Also on the platform will be Paul Allen director of Centre for Alternative Technology in Machynlleth. Their publication - Zero Carbon Britain - is a vision of how things could be. It is presented as an antidote to the apocalyptic visions of films like The Day After Tomorrow and Age of Stupid. But from the perspective of an artist, are darker visions more powerful? And anyway, should artists really concern themselves with trying to create a sustainable world? Is that what art does well?

Emergence is also an opportunity to find out practical information to help you or your company be more sustainable. Julie's Bicycle has pioneered work to help theatre, bands and music companies reduce their negative environmental impacts and in doing so, save money.

Perhaps the most important part of the day will be when you - those attending - get a chance to meet each other, respond, have conversations, share initiatives and ideas and plan action.
