Outside of my comfort zone, sometimes a good place to start, or at least - it makes me sit up and pay attention.
And so it was that my first art project as Artist in Residence with National Theatre Wales began - outside of my comfort zone.
Handmaid Red is a creative response to Green Man Red Woman, directed by Gerald Tyler; the first production that I witnessed as NYT Artist in Residence, at the GreenMan Festival.
Unusually, my camera went out of action during the GreenMan Festival and for the Green Man Red Woman performance; its memory card failed me! I resorted to doodling and dreaming inside little squares instead.
On returning to Cardiff, I stencilled little red dresses on top of fairytale book pages. Without a photographic memory, this made up a tangible reaction to the performance - an expression of little red dresses…
& a lot of dreams...
What began to unfold in my head was a project that would coincide with Valentines Day 2015. This seemed like an appropriate day for Red Woman to rise again - or, rather, a reinterpretation of her presence as it had affected and inspired me...
