Took part in the Mathilde's extraordinary workshop at Chapter yesterday - an absolutely amazing experience! Despite getting up at 4am to catch the first cold train from Prestatyn to Cardiff - and then being in an information vacuum at Chapter Arts for 2 hours - it was more than worthwhile... I learned more about theatre in a few short hours than I could ever have imagined possible.

I had no idea, absolutely no idea, what the day would be like. I didn't expect to have to physically participate, so my non-performer anxiety went through the roof... I thought it would be a much more passive exchange; me listening to Mathilde, taking notes maybe, bundling it all up and taking some kind of 'model' back to Prestatyn for those Team members who want act rather than make films - not a chance!

Instead Mathilde enabled me to return to looking, really looking, at our social interaction and the spaces we inhabit (and those we unwittingly trespass on), whether that be under the suspicious eye of the security guard in Iceland (alerted by the fact that we were taking pictures of the food rather than putting it into a shopping basket), or the cool scrutiny of a cultural caste, where to appear to break tacit codes can render you almost invisible. (Incidentally, for me that became the perfect moment to turn knitting into a radical act).

And so, instead of my preconceived idea that during the workshop I'd learn how to use that imagined 'model' and then pass it along to Team members, I've been shown how to explore the physical space we inhabit in a completely new way. And within that exploration, to find hugely effective creative & dramatic possibilities for making theatre, no matter who we appear to be, or where we happen to live.
