Urban Ink Canada and Alajotas, Nigeria, Atlantic Collaboration

I'd like to invite you to a performance next wednesday.

During the last few weeks I have been given the responsibility to document a collaboration between two theatre/mutli disciplinary/dance companies. They have travelled from Nigeria and Canada to work at Chapter in order to create a unique and special performance.

They have specifically come together to learn from each others practice and see how each 'contact' their ancestors to inform the present through ritual, ceremony and embodiment.

The group looks at the importance of their heritage e.g. first nation and black/indian roots.

I have witnessed the most unusual yet natural things in the rehearsal room and its a way of working that really goes back to our roots and the role of the 'fire' in storytelling. Its about who we are, where we are from and where we are going to?

This week the group have looked at the 'I' story and a technique developed by the Director Diane. The true stories developed with word and gesture have been touching. Christopher from Nigeria has also introduced the invocation of the spirit through ritual and ceremony accompanied by drums and African instruments.

Heritage and family is very important to the performers. When I met the performers they introduced themselves by name and by lineage and through the course of the rehearsals it has made me think - have we forgotten our roots and our family heritage? and how the focus has become the 'me' the individual and not the 'we' 'family' 'ancestors' of how we have come about...and how that informs us as writers and performers. I'd like to know your thoughts on this...

If you would like to come and witness the performance it will be at Chapter next Wednesday evening (the 7th), this will be a one off performance so please come and show them a warm Chapter welcome and support the work they have created.

You are also invited to partake in an open workshop the next day on the Thursday(free of charge) to learn more about their theatre practice and learn more of the history of theatre ( other than what we may have been taught traditionally at College/A level (Greek Theatre) etc.) This will be a hands on opportunity to develop your own practice. Contact Chapter to reserve a space.

Hope you can make it.
