What Are We Going To Do About Theatre and Performance in Cardiff?

It’s November and it’s Bonfire Night. So, in memory of Guy Fawkes, Lucid invites come to an Open Space event for anybody who cares about theatre in the capital and has something they want to say.

Whether you’re an actor, an audience member, a designer or a programme seller – whatever your role – if you’ve got something you want to get off your chest about the theatre scene in Cardiff, this is the place to do it and to engage with like-minded individuals.

Last March, Lucid and Chapter hosted an open space event about new theatre writing that attracted over sixty participants to swap viewpoints and exchange ideas. The feedback was really positive:

“Enjoyed the event and it was great to chat to others in similar situation to me,” (playwright)

“Thanks again for organising the writer's day - it was an enjoyable and valuable experience,” (writer/director)

“What a great idea this is - I meant to respond to you and say what a wonderful initiative,” (director)

This time we are posing a different question…

How good is Cardiff’s theatre scene? Do you want to blow it up and start again? Or do we need to light the touchpaper and blaze a trail? What needs to change? And what can we do about it?

Open Space brings people together with the belief that the right people for the right conversation are in the room. There are no speakers and no agenda. You make it for yourself. If a conversation doesn’t do it for you, then use ‘the law of two feet’ and move on to something that does.

Open Space – freedom to choose what you want to think, debate, plan and talk about with a forum for action at the end of the day.

Lucid is a new artist-centred resource with a curiosity for what’s possible.

Thanks, Matt. See you next time perhaps.

Hi Simon,

I've already got commitments on Sat - hope it goes well - as one of the other principles says - whoever is there are the right people.

Yes, Matthew, that's not a problem. I've checked the hand book and the first principle states that “Whoever is present are the right people for the discussion.”

Hi Simon - have a show in Didcot in the evening so may need to head off early afternoon. Is it okay if I come along in the morning? M X

Simon...would like to come but its short notice. There is an event in Swansea called Disruption that we are committed to on the same day.

Hope all goes well.
