INVITATION TO FREE PERFORMANCE AND FEEDBACK EVENING, WED 18TH NOV, CARDIFF

My colleague and I have created a music theatre piece which we have toured to small regional venues on and off for two years, but we have decided we need to make some changes. To help us do that we have organised a performance and feedback night in Cardiff on 18th November specifically for an invited audience of theatre makers and creative minds. We would like to invite you as people who can give us useful feedback, and crucially who will not just tell us what we want to hear. We are looking for honest, objective critique in the spirit of development. Almost like a focus group for the show!

On this occasion the tickets will be free; your feedback will be payment. The show will start at 7.30pm, running until around 9pm including a short interval, and then we will join the audience in a discussion of the show, asking specific questions, and taking feedback, for anything up to an hour. This will give us the opportunity to really zone in on what could be improved.
We did apply for the Scratch season at The Other Room that has just taken place, but were told the piece was too developed for that. What we have is a full show; we just want to sharpen its teeth and shine its boots. We want the audience to feel both amusement and unease; we would love you to help us achieve the perfect balance of those feelings. There is a saying that many hands make light work. We believe that many heads make good work!

Aside from the obvious benefits to us and our show that your feedback will provide, we are also keen to nurture the spirit of community within the arts in Cardiff. We hope that the evening will be an enjoyable and stimulating opportunity for discourse, for all who attend.
The venue for the evening will be Little Man Coffee Co., the management team of which is very supportive of this kind of local creative interaction.
The show itself, Behind the Blinds, is a series of darkly comic songs in the vein of Tim Minchin performed by a married couple, gradually revealing more and more about their neighbours and themselves.
The bar will open all evening for wine, beer and free popcorn!

In a nutshell:

What? Behind The Blinds
When? Wed 18th November, 7.30pm
Where? Little Man Coffee Co., Bridge Street, Cardiff
Who? Isabelle Paige and Richard Watson
Why? Development. Fun. POPCORN.

If you are able to attend, it would be great if you could RSVP via email to isabellepaige@hotmail.co.uk, or on the Event page, by 9th November. That way we can assess numbers and invite more people if required. We are not advertising the performance publicly because of the very specific nature of the evening. We feel like the optimum number of people for the focus group is around 25; more than that might be difficult to facilitate, and less won't feel like a full audience. So if you could let us know your intentions that would be very helpful. You are very welcome to bring friends but again please let us know by 9th November.
We very much hope you can make it!

Hi TEAM,

We'd love to invite you along to the next creative visit with Scottee at the National Theatre Wales office in Cardiff Monday 9th November 3-4pm. Everyone is welcome to attend, please email team@nationaltheatrewales.org to let us know you're coming!

What is a Creative visit?

This is when exciting artists/companies/performers/theatre makers etc etc are invited along to share their creative practice with us and how they work. This is an opportunity to find out more about them with the opportunity to ask questions and discuss their creativity.

Who's next? 9/11/2015 3-4pm

Scottee- Scottee is an artist from Kentish Town, North London. He is currently an associate artist at the iconic Roundhouse.

Scottee creates work about outsiderness; race, sexuality, class, age and gender. He creates spaces where the perceived underdog is celebrated, at the forefront and no longer ignorable.

Scottee has performed for audiences across the globe; Australia, Asia, Europe and America. His work in London has been shown at some of the worlds leading art spaces - Barbican, Royal Opera House, Tate Britain, Roundhouse, ICA and Royal Festival Hall but he prefers to make work in dodgy gay bars, public toilets, backstreet bedrooms and forgotten community centres.

Scottee is not easily definable; artist, broadcaster, attention seeker.
His work is live, brash, clumsy and will often leave you covered in confetti.

Or there's this one:

INVENT YOUR EVENT: CHAPTER 2
Opportunity for writers and literary practitioners

Create an event inspired by Roald Dahl
and deliver it throughout Wales during 2016

To mark Roald Dahl’s centenary in 2016, Literature Wales has announced a new funding scheme and outreach programme called Invent your Event. Funded by the Welsh Government’s Major Events Unit, Invent Your Event forms part of the Roald Dahl 100 centenary celebrations in Wales. It will use the magic of Roald Dahl’s words to inspire creativity amongst all ages across Wales.

As part of Chapter 2 of Invent your Event, Literature Wales invites Wales-based writers and literary practitioners (e.g. writers, storytellers, spoken word performers, literary critics) to create and deliver a Roald Dahl-inspired event.

The Roald Dahl Literary Estate has outlined a clear vision and set of values for the organisation ahead of the forthcoming centenary celebrations in 2016. They are: Masters of Invention; Makers of Mischief; and Champions of Good. Events should clearly align themselves with at least one of these values, be innovative, and encourage engagement and inclusion.

Your event must appeal to a clear audience profile (e.g. age, Welsh or English speakers, Welsh learners, ethnicity/ies), and could comprise a talk, workshop, performance or something else entirely, as long as it is distinctly literary in feel and inspired by the life and/or work of Roald Dahl. You might like to think about the kinds of organisations which would be booking your event, including:

  • Libraries
  • Youth group
  • Charities
  • Schools
  • Literary societies
  • Local festivals
  • Businesses
  • Universities

If successful, your event will be advertised nationally by Literature Wales as available to book through our funding scheme during 2016.

If successful, you will be eligible for up to £250 subsidy to help you to develop your idea, after which organisers will be able to apply for up to 50% funding towards staging your event at their venue (i.e. the cost of your fee and if relevant, reasonable travel and accommodation expenses). Grants will be capped at a maximum of £400 per application, although most will comprise £200 or less – i.e. your event should normally cost less than £400 for each event organiser to stage, and certainly no more than £800.

How to apply?

Email the following to roalddahl100wales@literaturewales.org with the subject ‘Chapter 2: Invent Your Event Artist Opportunity’:

  • A CV including contact details which you are happy to be made public
  • A short statement (no more than 300 words) about why you’d like to be involved in this project and why you feel you are qualified. Also include where you are based, how far you would be prepared to travel, and whether you have previous experience of creating and delivering literary events
  • A fully costed event outline. This must include your proposed target audience and organisation profile (e.g. University of the Third Age literature students) and which of the Roald Dahl Literary Estate values your event will align with.

The deadline for applications is Friday 30 October 2015.

Please be aware that you may be asked to attend an informal interview (which could be conducted via Skype). Knowledge of (or a strong desire to learn about) Roald Dahl’s work will be essential for this project.

(sorry this is a follow on from the post below as I could only post 4000 words in one go)

Please be aware that you may be asked to attend an informal interview (which could be conducted via Skype). Knowledge of (or a strong desire to learn about) Roald Dahl’s work will be essential for this project.

Should you be successful, please be aware that you may be asked to attend a professional development day in either Cardiff or Llanystumdwy, Gwynedd. Any cost incurred to attend this day should be included within your £3000 budget.
Please note – Literature Wales is also offering a second opportunity for writers and literary practitioners as part of Invent your Event. Please click here for more information.
