Waiting to go in and see the Beautiful Burnout; I quickly read the narrative and general backgroud behind the production to find out more about what I was about to see.

Firstly It follows five young fighters as they aim for the bright lights, the play focuses on a guy called Cameron Burns who's fighting for his club and mother.

My interpretation before going in was the above pretty much. I knew it was a play about a boxer trying to fight his way to the top and it was but it's much more than that.

The production infuses boxing and dancing together through pulsating music which is what I didn't expect. The Actors were phenominal, the energy that they had to perform the choreography blew my mind; but i still don't know wether I enjoyed the blend of boxing and dancing. To a degree the mix of the two I think limits the audience. The narrative of the play was good and the ending was unexpected so overall it was enjoyable. The video screens that made up the backdrop were also good and made the setting more intresting.

The play has had incredible reviews including 5 stars from The Independent On Sunday. I'd recommend it to others as it is a good play and If you like boxing and dancing you'll really love it.

I agree with Abdul and Buddug on how it had a poor representation of boxing, it didn't seem to potray it in a very positive way and I suppose the ending is a classic example of this. I didn't expect the ending and I suppose that was the only really good point about.

Me and my friends discussed this and alot of Buddug's comments were stuff we also brought up. Everything felt really good about it but the characters were underdeveloped. The plot i enjoyed but again it didnt cast boxing into the best light. And the ending just felt that they couldnt decide who should win more as they knew different people were cheering for the different boxers and that this ending worked but it didnt for me. It also ended very abruptly for my liking. Enjoyable theatre and something that i will remember but so much more could have been done.

I agree with Abdul. I saw it firstly up in Edinburgh 2years ago on their preview night...I was blown away by the production of it - I was close to tears with how good the lighting was! It was also thrust seating so it very much felt like an arena and the energy was incredible. Unfortunately with it being end on, it really didn't work. You really needed to be that close to the action to feel the energy, no matter how loudly they played the music!

My main issue was the way they were portraying boxing. They made all boxers out to be in it just for the money! Also, what was up with the female character? within seconds she changed her mind and 'realising' she was doing it for the wrong reasons?! That infuriated me.

It just felt like it was all glitz and glam, and no time was really invested in the characters. It lacked a true story with heart and they didn't seem to 'get' boxing. which is a massive shame because it could have been an awesome show otherwise!

Saying that though, I did LOVE the lighting, and the music, and the design, and the cool stage rotating bit...

Does anyone agree or disagree?

I thought it was amazing, high energy, visually stimulating. Although at points it got so loud I had to put my fingers in my ears.

But don't you think the ending is a bit of a let down?  Also it doesn't leave boxing in a positive light.  Was that ending really required?
