What I do:
Theatre Director
A little more about me:
Hi I’m Abdul - dad, son, brother, West Ham fan & theatre director. In London, I freelanced for a variety of different companies ranging from grassroots community-led organisations to larger national and regional companies.

I also set up a theatre company which has specialised in working with young people and communities since its inception in 2005. The company has delivered numerous projects and also started to create professional film and theatre productions.

Amongst the many projects YOCA has delivered and produced, the most notable was a short film 'Fiver' which was premiered at the BFI and also a play called 'White Riot' by Natalie Mitchell. After 10 years of the company being known as YOCA, a decision was taken to re-brand and relaunch the company as Fio (which is latin to become/ belong) - it will also be a charity. The company will deliver Projects, Productions and develop People.

My passion for theatre derives from the fact that it had such a profound and significant positive impact on my life. I initially came into the industry through vocational and practical routes - i.e. Youth Theatre and on the job experience, however since have attained a BA Hons in International Theatre Studies at University of East London and also have a 3rd of an MA for a Teacher Artists Partnership Programme with London Institute of Education. I am also a Clore Fellow having done the year long programme in 2013-2014.
Projects I’m working on:
Various Fio projects including 'Project Fio', Fio Participatory Artists Training Programme and various other things.

I am also working on a couple of smaller projects for other companies.

Finally I am trying to start an international theatre festival here in Wales!

The Mountaintop

Today sees us start rehearsals for 'The Mountaintop' by Katori Hall, the first time the play has been staged in Wales. We are putting it on at The Other Room, taking the play back to an intimate theatre space where it started life.

Whilst inevitably there is the first day feelings of nervousness- I am also extremely excited. We have an outstanding team of people from our 2 performers, to our creative team and producers, to all of the supportive staff at The Other Room, to the…

Projects which may be of interest.....

Hello everyone,

Quick blog to tell you a little more about a couple of projects that YOCA is running over the summer.

'Project FIO' - after last year's pilot we are delivering FIO again.  We are now at a crucial phase and looking for young people aged 13-19.  The project aims to engage with young people and show them the variety of opportunities available with the industry.  Not everyone enjoys performing, but…

Project Fio

So since I finished with NTW a few months back I have been busy quietly thinking about how I takeover the world.....................

Only playing, I have been busy working on various projects and thinking of how my career unfolds over the coming few years.  There is much to ponder and many opportunities that have arisen and many that have sailed by.  However I am keen to understand and investigate my role and place within Arts and Cultural…

All good cheers! Ah no problem. It was actually my last day in the office today :( I've left a card and some chocolate smiles for everyone (unless they have all been eaten already!) but I'll be coming to IWIW and hopefully Coriolanus so will hopefully see everyone there :)
